Netflix Orders Sci-fi ‘The Boroughs’ From Teams Behind ‘Stranger Things’ & ‘The Dark Crystal’
Netflix has ordered ‘The Boroughs‘, an intreaging new sci-fi series, executive produced by ‘Stranger Things’ The Duffer Brothers, from creators and showrunners Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, who were behind ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’.
In a seemingly picturesque retirement community in the New Mexico desert, a group of unlikely heroes must band together to stop an otherworldly threat from stealing the one thing they don’t have… time.
“We’ve been fans of Jeff and Will’s writing for a long time, and when they pitched us their idea for The Boroughs, we immediately knew they had something very special on their hands,” said The Duffer Brothers. “While the heroes in The Boroughs have a few more years on them than the kids from Stranger Things, they are a similarly lovable bunch of misfits, and we can’t wait for you to join them on an adventure that is at turns scary, funny, and deeply touching.”
From the description, it does rather sound like something which would be in The Duffer Brothers wheelhouse. Whilst ‘Stranger Things’ is very much a love letter to the 80s and those child-led movies such as ‘The Goonies’, this does seem somewhat reminiscent of another 80s film, ‘Cocoon’.

Working alongside the Duffer Brothers (who are pretty good at making shows) and their team has been a dream come true,” add Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. “They bring the perfect balance of heart and horror to our story. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to unlock the dark mystery buried beneath the sunny facade of The Boroughs.”
Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews are the Emmy Award-winning writer-creators of ‘The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance’ (Netflix and The Jim Henson Company). Their animated feature, ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim’ (Warner Brothers and New Line), hits theatres in April 2024 and their first feature, ‘Life In A Year‘, is streaming now on Prime Video. They are currently developing a pilot for FOX with MGM and have sold original shows to ABC, FOX, and FX as well as features to Sony, Paramount, and Broad Green.
‘The Boroughs’ will be exec produced by The Duffer Brothers and Hilary Leavitt on behalf of their company, Upside Down Pictures (‘Stranger Things’). Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews serve as exec producers and showrunners.
