‘Station 19’ Renewed For Season 7

As ABC continues its renewal announcements this week, the US network has happily announced that Station 19 will be returning for Season 7, joining its sister show ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘, which was renewed at the end of last month.

‘Station 19’ follows a group of heroic Seattle firefighters as they put their lives and hearts on the line. In Seattle, all firefighters are also trained EMTs and the crew at Station 19 is second to none. Working in 24-hour shifts, these professionals spend so much time together that they build relationships unlike any others.

The series is usually renewed alongside ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘, however, things took a little longer this year for the firefighting drama to join its medical counterpart. It was never an issue of ratings, which have been solid, or cast negotiations, which have held up renewals on some other ABC shows, as the cast are all still under contract. It appears there was some discussion internally about the length of the season order, which is usually 16-18 episodes. ABC hasn’t yet revealed exactly where they have settled on that.

There are also some changes behind the cameras. Krista Vernoff, who had been showrunner on both ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and ‘Station 19’ for the last few seasons announced she was stepping down from both roles at the end of the current seasons. ‘Greys’ exec producer Meg Marinis, who has been on that series since the beginning (starting as a researcher in season one), takes over the medical drama, whilst Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige will take over as co-showrunners and exec producers on ‘Station 19’. Clack is currently head writer and EP on the drama, whilst Paige, who is best known as co-creator of ‘The Fosters‘ and ‘Good Trouble’, joined the series in 2020 as a director, getting upped to being an EP in season six.

“I feel incredibly honoured to be entrusted with this dynamic and relevant show alongside Peter,” commented Clack. “The diversity of the cast, writers, and crew in addition to their enormous talent and dedication to their craft makes this a thrilling adventure to undertake. We are excited about the stories we get to tell using this worldwide platform and both understand the responsibility of being able to share them as we reach into millions of homes weekly. Many thanks to Krista and Shondaland for this opportunity and their faith in us.”

“I’m beyond honoured to be handed the reins to Station 19 – a show I love, full of incredible, complex characters, and resonant, important stories. To get to partner with a talent like Zoanne as showrunners truly makes it all the more exciting – we share a similar vision for the show, and we’ve got some incredible twists and turns planned for the coming season, adds Paige. “A huge thank you to the entire team at Shondaland, and everyone at ABC for their faith in us. And eternal gratitude to Krista Vernoff, for bringing me into the 19 family, and for modelling conscious leadership in such a powerful and deliberate way.”

This is the latest renewal by ABC in the last couple of weeks, following new season pick-ups for ‘The Rookie‘ and ‘Will Trent‘, joining the previously renewed ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘, and ‘Abbott Elementary‘. Still outstanding is ‘The Conners’, which is likely to get renewed, but there are cast contracts to figure out before they do. Also awaiting a verdict are ‘Home Economics’, ‘Big Sky’, and ‘Alaska Daily’, but all three of those are on much shakier ground.  We should get most of these renewals or cancellations confirmed by late April/early May as we head into “Upfronts” in mid-May where the US networks present their next season line-up to advertisers.

‘Station 19’ stars Jaina Lee Ortiz, Jason George, Grey Damon, Barrett Doss, Alberto Frezza, Jay Hayden, Okieriete Onaodowan, Danielle Savre, Miguel Sandoval, Boris Kodjoe, Stefania Spampinato, Carlos Miranda, Josh Randall, Merle Dandridge, and Pat Healy. Stacy McKee, Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Paris Barclay serve as executive producers on the series, which is produced by Shondaland and ABC Signature.

Station 19‘ airs on Disney+ in the UK and on ABC in the USA.
