‘Doctor Who’ Adds ‘Mindhunter’ Star Jonathan Groff To The Cast

The BBC has announced another interesting bit of casting for the new season of Doctor Who as the star of ‘Mindhunter’ and ‘Glee’, Jonathan Groff, joins the cast.

The adventures of the timelord (and friends) kick off again in November 2023, when new/old face David Tennant returns to the series as the Fourteenth Doctor in three specials to coincide with the 60th anniversary of ‘Doctor Who’. That will be followed by Ncuti Gatwa taking over the role as the Fifteenth Doctor in Christmas 2023, with a full series in 2024, alongside new companion Ruby (Millie Gibson).

As everything is very secretive about the upcoming seasons, we don’t know who Groff will be playing, but the news does say he will guest star “in a key role”. “I am so thrilled to jump into the extraordinary mind of Russell T Davies and watch the incredible Ncuti Gatwa soar in this iconic role,” said Groff about landing the part.

Jonathan shot to fame when he landed the role of Jessie in the musical comedy-drama ‘Glee’. He has since been internationally celebrated for his work on-screen, from starring as Eric in the box-office hit ‘Knock at the Cabin’, to playing Holden Ford in the critically acclaimed series ‘Mindhunter’. As well as having a leading role as the new Agent Smith in ‘The Matrix Resurrections’, Jonathan is renowned for his major voice acting roles in the ‘Frozen’ films. Jonathan has also made his mark on Broadway, dazzling audiences with his famous performance as King George III in Hamilton, where he was nominated for not only a Tony Award, but also a Primetime Emmy Award for the live stage recording.

“This is an incredible coup, and a great honour, to get such a huge star striding onto our set,” adds Showrunner, Russell T Davies. “So strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!”

Other guest roles announce for the new season include Jemma Redgrave, who returns as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and Aneurin Barnard (‘The White Queen’, ‘Cilla’, ‘Peaky Blinders’) as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, alongside Anita Dobson (‘Eastenders’), Michelle Greenidge (‘After Life’, ‘It’s A Sin’) and Jinkx Monsoon (‘Chicago’ – Broadway, ‘Drag Race’) who appear in undisclosed roles. Redgrave is also possibly set to return as Lethbridge-Stewart in a new spin-off series based around ‘UNIT’, although that has yet to be officially confirmed by the BBC.

Doctor Who‘ returns to screens in November 2023 with Tennant starring in three specials to coincide with the 60th-anniversary which will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Disney+ will air the series internationally. Ncuti Gatwa then takes over in Christmas 2023 as the Fifteenth Doctor.
