Stephen & Donald Glover Take Over Writing Duties On ‘Lando’ Series For Disney+
According to reports, Donald Glover, alongside his brother Stephen, will co-write the upcoming Star Wars series ‘Lando‘ for Disney+.
The series initially had Justin Simien, creator of the critically-acclaimed ‘Dear White People’ and director of directed Disney’s ‘Haunted Mansion’ movie, attached as writer, but it seems Simien has now left the project. This has led to the Glover brothers stepping in to take over script duties according to Variety. Should also be noted, this deal was signed prior to the WGA strike.
We don’t know anything about the plot for ‘Lando’ at the moment, other than it is set to follow the galaxy’s favourite scoundrel, Lando Calrissian in a brand-new event series for Disney+. The role was originally played by Billy Dee Williams in the Original Star Wars Trilogy, first popping up in ‘Empire Strikes Back’, and last reprising the role in ‘The Rise Of Skywalker’. Donald Glover played a younger version of Lando in the movie ‘Solo’, opposite Alden Ehrenreich who did an excellent job as the young Han Solo (whilst the movie has its issues, casting was never one of them!)
Interestingly, it has never been officially confirmed that Donald Glover (or Billy Dee Williams for that matter) would be reprising their roles for the series, although Glover’s involvement in the writing does rather suggest he will be the lead. However, the actor did say back in April he was in discussions with Lucasfilm about ‘Lando’, and commented in a GQ interview that the character would be “definitely somebody I like to hang out with” again.
This would be Donald Glover’s third new tv writing project post the multi-award-winning ‘Atlanta’, alongside horror-comedy ‘Swarm’, and the tv remake of the movie ‘Mr. & Mrs. Smith’, both of which were produced for Prime Video where the Glovers are under an overall deal. Stephen Glover previously worked alongside his brother as writer and exec-producer on ‘Atlanta’, and also penned the films ‘Guava Island’ and ‘House Party’.
