BBC Sets October Premiere For ‘Ghosts’ 5th & Final Season

As the beloved British TV series Ghosts heads into its 5th and final season later this week, the BBC has confirmed there will also be one final Christmas special this festive season to officially end the much-loved UK comedy.

“The final series of Ghosts starts on Friday…” said the Ghosts team on social media, who opted to draw the comedy to a close, adding “But there might be one last present under the Christmas tree this year #BBCGhosts.”

From the creators and stars of ‘Yonderland’, ‘Bill’, and the original stars of ‘Horrible Histories’, ‘Ghosts’ is set in Button House, home to restless spirits whose lives, or rather, afterlives, are thrown into turmoil when a young couple unexpectedly inherits the peaceful derelict property with plans to turn it into a bustling hotel.

The series stars writers and creators Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, with Lolly Adefope, Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.

A Christmas special seems like a fitting way to end the show, as ‘Ghosts’ has become something of a television highlight of the festive period, with 2022’s special securing 5.9 million viewers, making it the biggest comedy of the year. However, before we get there, the upcoming fifth season sees Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) begin exploring other means of making ends meet and contemplate a new chapter that could have a huge effect on the Ghosts’ (after) lives.

‘Ghosts’ is a Monumental Television production in association with Them There for the BBC and was commissioned by Jon Petrie, Director of BBC Comedy Commissioning. The producer is Pat Tookey-Dickson, the director is Simon Hynd, and the creators (also creators and stars of Yonderland and Bill, and the original stars of Horrible Histories) serve as Executive Producers alongside Monumental’s Alison Carpenter, Debra Hayward and Alison Owen. Ghosts is distributed by BBC Studios and the Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Seb Barwell.

Ghosts‘ Season 5 premieres Friday 6th October 2023 at 8.30pm on BBC One and will be available as a boxset on BBC iPlayer.
