The BBC has released a trailer for ‘Shetland’ Season 8 which premieres this November and sees Ashley Jensen (‘Mayflies’, ‘After Life’, ‘Ugly Betty’, ‘Extras’) take up her new lead role in the murder mystery drama.
Ashley stars as DI Ruth Calder, a native Shetlander who returns to the Isles after 20 years working for the Met in London. Ruth takes on the lead detective role left vacant by DI Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall) working closely with DS Alison ‘Tosh’ McIntosh (Alison O’Donnell).
Calder returns to Shetland on the trail of a vulnerable witness, and must team up with Tosh on a case that will test their fragile, new partnership. On top of the case, Calder is faced with figures from her past and cringes through a chance encounter with deadbeat ex-boyfriend Cal Innes. Even worse is her visit to estranged younger brother Alan, now the minister of their father’s old kirk, as it’s clear that the two siblings have starkly different views of their childhood.
Originally based on award-winning novels by crime writer Ann Cleeves, the new season of ‘Shetland’ will see Ashley join series regulars Steven Robertson (Sandy), Lewis Howden (Billy) and Anne Kidd (Cora).
Joining the cast for the eighth season are Phyllis Logan (Guilt, Downtown Abbey), Jamie Sives (Guilt, Annika), Dawn Steele (Holby City, Granite Harbour), Don Gilet (EastEnders, Sherwood), Ann Louise Ross (River City, Katie Morag) and Lorraine McIntosh (Outlander, My Name is Joe). Other cast includes Angus Miller (Donnie), Conor McCarry (PC Alex Grant) and Eubha Akilade (PC Lorna Burns).
‘Shetland’ is written by Paul Logue and produced by Louise V Say. Executive producers are Gaynor Holmes for the BBC, Kate Bartlett and Denise Paul for Silverprint Pictures.
