ABC Renews ‘9-1-1’ For Season 8

The firefighters find success in their new home

by Dave Elliott

The firefighters of 9-1-1 have found success in their new home on ABC, as the US network announces the drama will return for Season 8… And before anyone asks, no we don’t yet have a UK premiere date for Season 7 on Disney+.

‘9-1-1’ explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders – including police officers, firefighters and dispatchers – who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations. These emergency responders must try to balance saving those who are at their most vulnerable with solving the problems in their own lives. The show draws from real-life, high-pressure experiences of first responders who regularly face heart-stopping situations that are often unpredictable, intense and uplifting at the same time.

The drama ran for six seasons on FOX in the USA, and was the number one series on the network. However, the show is made by the Disney-owned 20th Television. That meant FOX had to pay a lot of money to Disney to keep them on the air, but had no overseas or resale rights to the dramas. Given the show cost around $10 million an episode, FOX just couldn’t make the numbers work, so rather than cancel it, Disney took the series back and moved it to ABC, where it has thrived.

It’s currently ABC’s most-watched series across all platforms this season, drawing an audience of 11.76 million total viewers across the first seven days, and is ABC’s highest-rated multiplatform drama in the critical 18-49 demographic. So it seems moving networks did it no harm at all!

The series stars Angela Bassett as Athena Grant, Peter Krause as Bobby Nash, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Buckley, Oliver Stark as Evan “Buck” Buckley, Kenneth Choi as Howie “Chimney” Han, Aisha Hinds as Henrietta “Hen” Wilson, Ryan Guzman as Eddie Diaz and Gavin McHugh as Christopher Diaz.

Created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, “9-1-1” is produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television and Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision. Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, John J. Gray, Brad Buecker, Kristen Reidel, Juan Carlos Coto and Lyndsey Beaulieu also serve as executive producers. Minear also serves as showrunner.

We don’t yet have a date for when ‘9-1-1‘ Season 7 will land on Disney+ UK, however, the drama may turn up at some point in April 2024, as previous seasons have run around a month behind the USA (where it launched in March). If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when they get a UK premiere date.

On a side note, Season 5 of the sister show, 9-1-1: Lone Star, is not due in the USA until the Autumn (aka “Fall”) 2024 Season, so that will be a while away yet.
