‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Renewed For Season 21 By ABC

The longest-running primetime medical drama

by Dave Elliott

The longest-running primetime medical drama on US television will continue to be the longest-running primetime medical drama on US television as ABC renews Grey’s Anatomy for Season 21.

The series follows the staff of Grey Sloan as they encounter more hurdles in their professional and personal lives. The record-breaking Shondaland franchise explores the ever-expanding world of modern medicine through the eyes of beloved returning and new characters.

Whilst long-running star Ellen Pompeo has rather taken to a part-time role on the series at this point, it doesn’t seem to have dampened the show’s popularity with fans. At 20 season in, it still manages to reinvent itself, introducing new cast, such as a new group of interns, or bringing back old faces to liven things up.

The current 20th Season, which is airing now in the UK on Disney+, stars Scott Speedman (as Nick Marsh), Camilla Luddington (Jo), Chris Carmack (Link), James Pickens Jr (Richard), Kim Raver (Teddy Altman), Jake Borelli (Levi) and Anthony Hill (Winston). This season also sees Jessica Capshaw return in a guest-starring role as Dr. Arizona Robbins, along with Alex Landi returning as Dr. Nico Kim. Ellen Pompeo appears periodically as Dr. Meredith Grey, whilst also exec producing and providing voiceover.

One person behind the scenes who will be breathing a sigh of relief will be Meg Marinis, who took over showrunning duties in Season 20 from longtime showrunner Krista Vernoff. Marinis began as a researcher in season one of the drama, working her way up to exec producer, and then showrunner.

“The loyalty and love of Grey’s Anatomy fans has propelled us into a historic 21st season, and I could not be more grateful,” said creator and EP Shonda Rhimes. “Meg Marinis’ storytelling is a gift that continues to keep the show vibrant, compelling and alive, and I can’t wait to see what she has in store for next season.”

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ was created and is executive produced by Shonda Rhimes (‘Scandal’, ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, ‘Station 19’). Betsy Beers (‘Scandal’, ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, ‘Station 19’), Mark Gordon (‘Saving Private Ryan’), Debbie Allen, Zoanne Clack and Meg Marinis are executive producers. The drama is produced by ABC Signature, which is a part of Disney Television Studios.

Grey’s Anatomy‘ Season 20 is currently streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
