The Fifteenth Doctor will have a second companion with him for his second season, as the BBC announces Varada Sethu will join Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson in ‘Doctor Who‘.
“I feel like the luckiest person in the world. It is such an honour to be a part of the Whoniverse, and I’m so grateful to the whole Doctor Who family – because that is what they are – for welcoming me with open arms and making me feel so at home,” said Sethu. “I couldn’t ask for a better team than Ncuti and Millie to be on this adventure with, this is SO much fun!”
Varada Sethu has most recently appeared in the Disney+ Star Wars series ‘Andor’, and previously popped up in the BBC apocalyptic drama ‘Hard Sun’, Sky’s ‘Strike Back’, and Prime Video drama ‘Hanna’. She also appeared in the movie ‘Jurassic World Dominion’.
“I first worked with Varada on a BBC production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and it’s a joy to welcome her on board the TARDIS,” adds Showrunner, executive producer and writer Russell T Davies. “Right now in the studio, shooting for 2025, we’ve got Ncuti, Millie and Varada fighting side by side – we need all three, because the stakes are higher than ever!”
If you’d been reading various news articles a few months ago, you may have seen some stories about Millie leaving the show at some point in season two. It remains to be seen if that is the case, but it certainly seems that both companions will be on board the TARDIS alongside Fifteen initially.
‘Doctor Who’ is produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios for the BBC and Disney Branded Television. Russell T Davies is showrunner, executive producer and writer. Additional executive producers include Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter.
‘Doctor Who‘ Season 1 (as they have reset the counter for the show) premieres at 00:00 on Saturday, 11th May 2024 with a double-bill on BBC iPlayer and will then air on BBC One that evening in primetime. Outside the UK, ‘Doctor Who’ begins streaming May 10th, at 7pm ET on Disney+ where available, giving audiences a simultaneous global launch. An episode will continue to drop on BBC iPlayer at 00:00 on Saturdays, followed by a primetime slot on BBC One each week following that.
