Adult Swim has ordered another two seasons of ‘Rick and Morty‘, which was already renewed up to Season 10, so is now guaranteed up to Season 12.
‘Rick and Morty’ follows a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his inherently timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. Rick Sanchez is living with his daughter Beth’s family and constantly bringing her, his son-in-law Jerry, granddaughter Summer and grandson Morty into intergalactic escapades.
The greenlight news was revealed during a ‘Rick and Morty’ at NYCC panel by series executive producers Dan Harmon and Scott Marder who were joined by series regulars Harry Belden, Ian Cardoni, Sarah Chalke, Spencer Grammer, and Chris Parnell. The panel also debuted a sneak animatic from a Season 8 episode, set to premiere in 2025, which you can see below:
“From Season One, Rick and Morty set a new standard in adult animation and has shown no signs of stopping,” said Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim. “Dan, Scott and the rest of the immensely talented team behind Rick and Morty are constantly outdoing themselves and I’ll be joining the millions of fans around the world in looking forward to more adventures in the years to come.”
The show was originally renewed back in 2018 for an unprecedented 70 episodes, which would have taken it to Season 10. This latest renewal brings that up to Season 12. It last aired in 2023 with season seven, so this will keep the animated series on air until at least 2029!
“I couldn’t be prouder to have taken this baton pass of a lifetime during Rick and Morty’s fourth season and get us to Season 10,” said showrunner Scott Marder, who took over from Mike McMahan in 2020. “Getting to go beyond that now is such a gift I can’t wait to give our fans. Rick and Morty – a hundred years – forever!”
The run has not been without some bumps in the road, most notably, Justin Roiland, co-creator of the series and original voice of Rick and Morty was fired following allegations of problematic behaviour (it should also be pointed out that criminal charges against Roiland were dismissed due to insufficient evidence, however, he is not returning to the show.) This meant they needed to find new voices for their leads. On Rolland’s other show, ‘Solar Opposites’, they opted to completely change the voice of Korvo (the character voiced by Rolland) and hired British actor Dan Stevens. However, with ‘Rick and Morty’, they went with “soundalikes” instead, and have hired Ian Cardoni to voice Rick, and Harry Belden to voice Morty.
Rick and Morty was the #1 comedy across all of US cable during seasons three, four, five?and?six, and has garnered two Emmys for “Outstanding Animated Program.” A global phenomenon, the most recent season debuted in over 134 countries in 38 languages.
‘Rick and Morty‘ Season 8 does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Adult Swim in the USA in 2025. Channel 4 currently holds the UK broadcast rights to Adult Swim content (although we aren’t sure when that deal ends), so, at the moment, we expect Season 8 to air on Channel 4 in the UK in 2025.
