Paramount Pictures has released a trailer for ‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’, which comes to cinemas in May 2025. Whilst not officially announced as the final movie of the long-running franchise, the new title and the trailer do seem to suggest it might be.
The movie, which was originally set as “Part 2” of the last film, “Dead Reckoning”, continues the plot of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt dealing with a dangerous, self-aware, self-learning, AI called “The Entity” that poses a global threat. Hunt, Luther (Ving Rhames), Benji (Simon Pegg), and Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) had to retrieve two parts of a key needed to control “The Entity” before it falls into dangerous hands. Their mission leads them through a series of high-stakes confrontations, double-crosses, and action-packed sequences, including a dramatic train escape. As Hunt confronts ghosts from his past, he also navigates betrayals, making it one of his most personal missions yet. At the end of the film, Ethan realizes “The Entity” is hidden aboard an old sunken Russian submarine, but an old foe, Gabriel (Esai Morales), is also after it.
Alongside Cruise, Rhames, Pegg, Ferguson and Morales, the new film sees Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Henry Czerny, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mariela Garriga and Indira Varma all return. They are joined by Hannah Waddingham, Janet McTeer, Holt McCallany, Katy O’Brian, Nick Offerman and Tramell Tillman.
As we mentioned at the top of the article, this has not officially been confirmed as an end to the ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise, but both the trailer and the title seem to suggest that it could be… Whether that is a marketing ploy to try and get some more eyes back on it in theatres, or whether Paramount are really calling it quits, remains to be seen.
Christopher McQuarrie (“Rogue Nation,” “Fallout”, “Dead Reckoning”) returns as director. The script is written by McQuarrie, Bruce Geller and Erik Jendresen. Cruise and McQuarrie serve as producers, with Chris Brock, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Tommy Gormley, Don Granger and Susan Novick as exec producers, and Gina Hallas as co-producer.
‘Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning’ arrives in cinemas from the 23rd May 2025.
