As we head toward a new year, it’s time to close out 2024 with the results of this year’s Geektown Awards! The last 12 months have been another spectacular year for TV, film and video games, and there were some tricky choices to make for people voting across all categories. I did want to say a huge “thank you” to the thousands of people who voted this yeas, and a massive congratulations to Phil who won the enormous main prize, and Terri who won the runner-up mystery box. Both have been contacted.
With the prize winners announced, we move on to the awards themselves. A reminder – everything in the awards is voted for by visitors to this website, not picked by us. We begin, as always, with the ‘Best New and Best Returning Drama’ categories.
Best New Drama
Nominees: Based on a True Story, Season 1 – Sky Max, Criminal Record, Season 1 – Apple TV+, Interior Chinatown – Disney+, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Season 1 – Amazon Prime, Presumed Innocent – Apple TV+, Rivals, Season 1 – Disney+, Shogun, Season 1 – Disney+, Supacell – Netflix, Sugar, Season 1 – Apple TV+, Sweetpea, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic
Bronze: Sweetpea, Season 1 – Sky Atlantic
Silver: Shogun, Season 1 – Disney+
Gold Winner: Rivals, Season 1 – Disney+
Whilst ‘Shogun’ might be the awards darling, it’s Disney’s wonderfully British romp through the English countryside, ‘Rivals,’ that just nips the top spot for us here at Geektown.
Based on Jilly Cooper’s bestselling Rutshire Chronicles, the wildly entertaining 80s-set drama featured a stellar cast including Alex Hassell, Aidan Turner, David Tennant, Katherine Parkinson, Danny Dyer, Bella Maclean, Nafessa Williams, and so many more. A truly well-deserved win. It is, of course, returning for Season 2.
Best Returning Drama
Nominees: Cobra Kai, Season 6 (Final) – Netflix, Heartstopper, Season 3 – Netflix, Industry, Season 3 – BBC One, Reacher, Season 2 – Prime Video, Sherwood, Season 2 – BBC, Slow Horses, Season 4 – Apple TV+, The Diplomat (Netflix Series), Season 2 – Netflix, The Outlaws, Season 3 – BBC One, Trigger Point, Season 2 – ITV, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light, Season 2 – BBC One
Bronze: Slow Horses, Season 4 – Apple TV+
Silver: Cobra Kai, Season 6 (Final) – Netflix
Gold Winner: Reacher, Season 2 – Prime Video
Neither the MI6 agents of ‘Slow Horses’ nor the martial arts kids of ‘Cobra Kai’ could battle their way past the man-mountain which is ‘Reacher‘.
Based on the novels by Lee Child, the drama stars Alan Ritchson, perfectly cast as Jack Reacher, a former U.S. Army military police major who now uses his extensive skills in investigative and combat whilst travelling from town to town across the United States, helping people he meets along the way. It returns for Season 3 on Thursday, 20th February 2025 on Prime Video.
