Sean Bean has lined up a new role as the Sheriff of Nottingham in MGM+’s ‘Robin Hood‘ series based on the classic tale of the roguish outlaw hero who took from the rich and gave to the poor.
The new drama comes from Lionsgate Television with showrunner John Glenn (SEAL Team) and producer-director Jonathan English (Librarians: The Next Chapter, The Ark) at the helm. It is described as a “smart, sweeping, romantic adventure”, which brings a modern energy to the classic story, whilst keeping the historical authenticity, and is set following the Norman invasion of England.
This version of the Sheriff of Nottingham is described as “a statesman, a strategist, and a builder of Nottingham itself.” He’s a loving father, a politician, and cousin to King Henry II. He navigates the dangerous tides of power, facing not only an outlaw in the woods but also the ambitions of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Norman Barons that surround him. Cunning and pragmatic, he is a man who rules with an iron hand, not out of cruelty, but an unshakable belief that the law, as Normans see it, must be preserved…
Bean joins the previously announced relative newcomer, Australian actor Jack Patten, who takes the title role in his first television series leading role. The story follows “Rob”, a Saxon forester’s son, and Marian, the daughter of a Norman lord, who fall in love and work together to fight for justice and freedom. As Rob rises as the leader of a band of rebel outlaws, Marian infiltrates the power at court, as both work together to thwart royal corruption and bring peace to the land.
Sean Bean recently starred in Disney+ Tudor murder-mystery drama ‘Shardlake‘, and can next be seen as a crime family boss in BBC’s ‘This City is Ours‘. As ever when Sean is in a show, the bets are on to see whether he manages to make it through the season without being killed off…
Glenn and English serve as writers and executive producers, alongside Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures. Carly Kleinbart and Nicole Bryant will oversee the series for Hidden Pictures. ‘Robin Hood’ will shoot its ten-episode first season at PFI Studios in Serbia, with production beginning in February.
‘Robin Hood‘ will premiere later in 2025 on MGM+ in the USA, UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Latin America, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
