Prime Video Orders New Series ‘Bloodaxe’ From ‘Vikings’ Creator Michael Hirst

by Dave Elliott

‘Vikings’ creator Michael Hirst is stepping back into a world he knows well as Prime Video orders Bloodaxe, a new historical drama about the legendary Viking warrior Erik Bloodaxe.

‘Bloodaxe‘ tells the gripping story of one of history’s most legendary Viking warriors, Erik Bloodaxe, and his formidable wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. As they battle for the throne of Norway, the land is plunged into turmoil, rife with fierce rivals, shifting allegiances, and ruthless betrayals. With war on the horizon and chaos sweeping the kingdom, powerful Scandinavian kings – and even an influential English ruler – are drawn into the conflict. The stage is set for a thundering, cataclysmic new Viking saga, brimming with ferocity and intrigue.

The series is created, written and executive produced by ‘Vikings’ creator Michael Hirst, alongside his son, Horatio Hirst, and is produced by MGM Television. Whilst the show comes from Hirst and MGM Television, who produced both the original ‘Vikings’, and Netflix’s ‘Vikings: Valhalla’, there is unlikely to be any direct crossover. This period of history is decades after the original show, and decades before ‘Valhalla’.

“We are thrilled to partner with Michael and Horatio Hirst, who have an impressive track record bringing historical dramas to life with stunning authenticity and gripping storytelling,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon MGM Studios. “This story is a fascinating tale of Erik Bloodaxe and we can’t wait to unveil this new chapter to transport our global customers back to a fascinating era of history.”

In between his work on Norse history series, Michael Hirst created the Billy the Kid series for MGM+ which was renewed last year for a 3rd & final season, and is also developing another historical drama based on the book A Day of Fire: A Novel of Pompeii, again alongside his son, Horatio Hirst.

“I feel blessed and deeply excited that Amazon has given me the opportunity to return to the fantastic world of the Norse Sagas and the men, women and gods of the Viking world who have come to mean so much to me,” adds Michael Hirst. “Horatio and I intend to open your eyes to incredible new characters and unbelievable stories, all of which happen to be true and many of which changed the course of history.”

Bloodaxe‘ Season 1 does obviously not have a premiere date but will air globally on Prime Video when it is released. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
