LucasFilm Announces Shawn Levy’s ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Movie Starring Ryan Gosling Beings Production This Year

LucasFilm has announced ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’, a new Star Wars movie, directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, will begin production this Autumn.

Levy, who recently directed and produced Marvel’s hit ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, made a surprise appearance during ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ panel at Star Wars Celebration in Japan today, joining Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and chief creative officer Dave Filoni on stage to confirm his project for the live audience.

Set approximately five years after the events of ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’, Gosling will play a brand-new character. “This is not a prequel, this is not a sequel. It’s a new adventure,” said Levy, whose other major project is Netflix’s smash hit ‘Stranger Things’, along with the films ‘Night at the Museum’ and ‘Free Guy’.

On stage, Gosling commented that the film has “such a great story with great and original characters,” with “so much heart and adventure.” He also added, “There is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”

We don’t know much more about the film than that, but it is written by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee, Warrior, See), with Levy directing and starring Gosling. It is one of several theatrical projects still in development from Lucasfilm, including films by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, Taika Waititi and a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg.

‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ arrives in theatres in May 2027.
