After a slightly longer summer break than originally planned, Geektown Radio is finally back with Episode 501! Dave is joined by Matt from Entertainment Talk for a bumper 85-minute return packed with reviews, renewals, cancellations, casting news and UK premiere dates, including chat about ‘Silo’, ‘Reacher‘, ‘Lanterns‘, ‘Stuart Fails To Save The Universe‘, ‘Toy Story 5’, Marvel’s new ‘X-Men’ and much more.
Yes, it has been a while. Episode 500 landed all the way back on 8th June, and while the plan was always to take a summer break, three months was perhaps a little more “summer” than originally intended. However, batteries have been recharged, an enormous pile of television has been watched, and Geektown Radio is back!
Things did not exactly go smoothly on the return either, given Dave arrived back from Los Angeles horribly jet-lagged and immediately had to deal with the Geektown YouTube channel being hacked. Because apparently easing gently back into work would have been far too sensible…
Thankfully, there is plenty of considerably more entertaining stuff to discuss on the podcast.
Matt kicks off the reviews with ‘Toy Story 5’, which he has already watched five times, because of course he has. Alongside discussing the latest adventure for Woody, Buzz and the gang, he also gives his thoughts on the long-delayed ‘Coyote vs Acme’ and game ‘Life is Strange: Reunion’.
Dave has spent the summer working through an impressively large mountain of television. That includes ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3, ‘Silo’ Season 3, ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Season 4, ‘Ghosts Australia’, ‘Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Lestat’, ‘Reacher’ Season 4, ‘Outer Banks’ Season 5, ‘Dark Matter’, ‘Trigger Point‘, ‘Vigil’ and HBO’s ‘Lanterns’.
There is also lots of love for ‘Stuart Fails To Save The Universe’, the wonderfully strange ‘Big Bang Theory’ spin-off which follows Stuart as he attempts to fix a multiversal disaster caused by one of Sheldon’s inventions. Somehow, that premise actually works extremely well.
On the gaming side, Dave has been playing the early access version of ‘Breathedge 2’, alongside ‘Star Wars: Zero Company’, which is essentially an XCOM-style tactical game set in the Star Wars universe. It is an appealing combination, although perhaps not quite as deep as we might have hoped.
Then comes the news. And after being away for three months, there is rather a lot of it.
We run through a huge batch of renewals and cancellations, including the ends of ‘Wonder Man’, ‘The Boroughs’, ‘Spider-Noir’ and ‘Ransom Canyon’, alongside renewals for ‘The Gentlemen’, ‘Rivals’, ‘Ludwig’, ‘MobLand’, ‘It: Welcome To Derry’, ‘Stuart Fails To Save The Universe’ and many more.
There is also a major batch of UK air date news. We discuss what exactly is happening with ‘NCIS’ Season 23 following Disney losing the UK rights, along with the UK arrivals of ‘Sheriff Country’ and ‘Boston Blue’.
Further ahead, we have dates for ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Season 2, ‘Black Doves’ Season 2, the second half of ‘Rivals’ Season 2, ‘Yellowjackets’ Season 4, ‘Bad Monkey’ Season 2, ‘Star Wars: Ahsoka’ Season 2 and the fourth and final season of ‘Silo’.
Elsewhere in the news, Henry Cavill (The Witcher) confirms Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House) is writing the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ adaptation, ‘Far Cry’ is becoming an anthology series, and Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ has been forced to recast Kratos following an injury to Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy), with Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) stepping into the role.
We also discuss Disney+’s zombie-filled ‘Afterlife With Archie’, HBO Max’s gloriously ridiculous true crime spoof ‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’, and Marvel finally revealing the new generation of X-Men.
There is also an extremely meta ‘Sons of Anarchy’ reunion series called ‘Legends’, Netflix expanding the ‘Manifest’ universe with ‘Arrivals’, Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) returning as Cher for a sequel series, Dan Stevens (Legion) becoming the new ‘RoboCop’, and AMC and Canal+ developing a continuation of ‘Point Break’.
Finally, we take a look at some of the biggest shows arriving over the coming week, including ‘Neagley’, ‘Slow Horses’ Season 6, ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’, ‘MobLand’ Season 2, ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 3, ‘Outlander: Blood Of My Blood’ Season 2 and ‘The Split Up’.
And, as an added bit of good news, Matt reveals that he proposed to his lovely Mina over the break, and she said yes. Congratulations to them both!
