Guy Ritchie’s influence on the film world over the last few decades has been powerful, and now the iconic director is turning his attention to television. Ritchie has already adapted his 2019 picture, The Gentlemen, for Netflix, and he also directed select episodes of MobLand on Paramount+.
It was recently announced that Ritchie’s next television offering will be Young Sherlock, which could act as a prequel to the 56-year-old’s beloved movies starring Robert Downey Jr.
Ritchie Will Direct Series Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin
Ritchie’s Young Sherlock series is well underway, with numerous huge stars joining the cast. Colin Firth is one of the biggest names on the bill, alongside other well-known actors including Joseph Fiennes and Natascha McElhone. The offering written by Matthew Parkhill will star Hero Fiennes Tiffin in the starring role, playing an early version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary sleuth.
The series is based on Andy Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes books, which have been published since 2010. The offerings imagine the detective when he was just starting out in the 1860s, and there have been eight in the series to date. This means that the television version will have plenty of source material to draw from, and it could potentially run for a few years. With Ritchie on board as director, he may find a way to tie the series into his own hugely successful Sherlock Holmes pictures.
Could Other Ritchie Films Become Series?
With Ritchie now clearly interested in expanding his television library, there’s a question of whether any of his other classic pictures could be revisited in the small screen format. Snatch was already made into a series in 2017, but the director wasn’t involved in its creation, and it was considered a flop. Ritchie was involved with the Lock, Stock… series in 2000, but this only aired for one season.
If he were to adapt any of his past films for modern viewers, most people would love to see a new version of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. The 1998 film kickstarted Ritchie’s directorial career, and it’s still regarded by many as his best work.
There’s also a strong chance that the filmmaker would be able to persuade Vinnie Jones to return in some capacity. The legendary hardman made his first big screen appearance in the 1998 picture, and that propelled him on his illustrious career that’s made him one of the world’s most famous faces.
Jones has appeared in more than 80 films, numerous TV shows, and games. He’s even entered the realm of blackjack online and has his own Vinnie Jones Blackjack game. The offering is found alongside other games like Vegas Single Deck Blackjack and Atlantic City Blackjack, but stands out thanks to Jones’s famous face. This highlights how he’s still keen to stay in the spotlight and may feature in more of Ritchie’s future television works.
Filming of Young Sherlock wrapped in early 2025, and it’s expected to hit Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2026. If it’s a success, it could lead to even more Ritchie creations on the small screen, as streaming platforms scramble to work with the legendary filmmaker.
