Hudson & Rex Season 7 Gets A May UK Premiere Date On U&Alibi

UKTV has set a May premiere date for the return of “one cop and his dog” police series ‘Hudson & Rex‘ for Season 7 in the UK on U&Alibi.

Detective Charlie Hudson (John Reardon) and his extraordinary German Shepherd partner Rex resolve complex cases each week with the help of Dr. Sarah Truong (Mayko Nguyen), techie turned detective, Jesse Mills (Justin Kelly), and Superintendent Joe Donovan (Kevin Hanchard) in the seaside metropolis of St. John’s, Newfoundland.

In the new series, Detective Charlie Hudson and his remarkable German Shepherd partner, Rex, realise the true strength of their unbreakable bond when Charlie is called away from active duty to help save his brother. Without skipping a beat, Rex and the members of the Major Crimes division step up to carry on the duo’s detective legacy. With their community depending on them, it’s critical that the Major Crimes division is more in sync than ever before. United by Rex, Superintendent Joe Donovan, Dr. Sarah Truong, and tech specialist Jesse Mills work together to bring justice in an extraordinary series of crimes unfolding in St. John’s.

In the opening episode, “Double Dog Dare”, when a murder investigation devolves into a kidnapping, Rex’s nose leads him and Charlie to Bell Island – and right into the middle of a double murder plot.

There is a couple of bits of sad news some fans may have missed…

The fabulously named good boy, Diesel vom Burgimwald, who played Rex in the series, sadly passed away during the filming of episode 2 of Season 7. Diesel, who was a 15th-generation descendant of the Santo, the first German Shepherd to star in ‘Kommissar Rex’, the 90s Austrian-Italian television series on which ‘Hudson & Rex’ is based, died from cancer in August 2024. The character of Rex will continue, and be kept in the family as Diesel’s nephews, Dillon, Dante, and cousin, Dreamer, who were already working as “stand-ins” on the show, will take over sharing the lead role. Meanwhile, Diesel’s cousins, Izzy and Iko, who performed a lot of the doggy stunts for the series, will continue in their roles as stunt doubles.

In a double-blow this season, human lead John Reardon revealed in December 2024 that he had been diagnosed with tonsil cancer. That is the reason the synopsis of this season mentions Detective Charlie Hudson being “called away”, and he is missing for a number of episodes. Thankfully, Reardon is now cancer-free and fit to work again.

Hudson & Rex’ is produced by Shaftesbury in collaboration with Pope Productions and Germany’s Beta Film. Beta also handles international distribution for the series.
