With summer days slowly approaching, so are some of the season’s fresh new TV releases. From thrilling drama to heartfelt romance, every television enthusiast can find something appealing to their taste. Here’s a closer look at some of the most anticipated TV series to look out for this summer.
‘Squid Game’ Season 3 (Netflix)
Netflix’s global sensation ‘Squid Game’ is set to return with its third and final season on June 27. The Korean dystopian survival drama, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, turned into a cultural phenomenon when it first premiered in 2021, becoming Netflix’s most-watched series. It also received critical acclaim, with season 1 holding a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The series is centred around a group of individuals dealing with severe financial problems who are invited to take part in a mysterious competition for a chance at a large reward. However, as the games take on a dark twist, they soon discover that the price for losing is even greater.
Praised for its sharp social commentary, captivating storytelling, and striking visuals, we expect the series’ return this summer to deliver a powerful and thought-provoking conclusion to the story.
‘Ginny & Georgia’ Season 3 (Netflix)
The popular comedy drama ‘Ginny & Georgia’ is coming back to Netflix on June 5 with 10 fresh episodes. The story follows the lives of Georgia Miller (Brianne Howey), a protective mother with a troubled past, and her 15-year-old daughter Ginny (Antonia Gentry), who is dealing with everyday teenage problems while uncovering her mother’s darkest secrets.
Georgia is capable of anything when it comes to protecting her children, including identity theft, running illegal casino games, and even murder. This is exactly what led to the shocking events of the season 2 finale, where Georgia got arrested at her own wedding.
So, what will happen in season 3? We can definitely expect it to pick up right in the aftermath of Georgia’s arrest, and it’s surely going to be a wild ride! What’s more, the drama is far from over, as Netflix has already confirmed that the series has also been renewed for a fourth season, so viewers can get ready for even more plot twists.
‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Season 3 (Prime Video)
Season 3 of the hit coming-of-age series ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ will premiere in July, as Prime Video has announced in March. Based on the young adult novel trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jenny Han, it is certain that the series will come to its conclusion with its third and final season, which is adapted from the final instalment of the book series, ‘We’ll Always Have Summer.’
The story revolves around the main character Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung), who finds herself caught up in a love triangle with brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno), as their families are spending every summer together at the Fishers’ house in Cousins Beach.
Season 3 will feature 11 episodes, making it the longest season of the series, so fans can definitely look forward to more twists and emotional moments. The new season picks up two years after the events of the season 2 finale, with Belly now in college and in a relationship with Jeremiah, and – of course – Conrad returning to stir up some drama.
Which of the brothers will Belly end up with? We’ll find out soon, as she’ll be forced to make the final decision this summer.
‘Wednesday’ Season 2 (Netflix)
Another long-anticipated Netflix hit is making its comeback this summer is ‘Wednesday.’ As Netflix has announced, season 2 of the supernatural mystery series will be split into two parts, each consisting of four episodes, with release dates set for August 6 and September 3 – which, interestingly enough, both fall on a Wednesday.
Based on the iconic Addams Family universe, ‘Wednesday’ has become one of the most viewed series on the streaming platform. The story centres around Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), who is sent to Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts, after being expelled from her previous school. We follow her as she discovers her psychic abilities and attempts to solve a local murder mystery.
In the upcoming season, viewers can look forward to even darker tone, as Wednesday returns to Nevermore to face another supernatural mystery while delving deeper into her family’s secrets.
‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ (Starz/MGM+)
A prequel to the historical drama series ‘Outlander’ is set to premiere on August 8 on Starz in the US and on August 9 on MGM+ in the UK. ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ will explore the lives and love stories of the parents of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie (Sam Heughan), the beloved main protagonists from the original series based on the novels by Diana Gabaldon.
The series will follow two parallel storylines set in different time periods: Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater) and Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) in 18th century Scotland, and Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) during the World War I era in England.
Even though ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ features an entirely new cast and fresh characters, it promises loyal viewers a deeper look into the origins of their favourite characters, as well as new perspectives on the events that unfold in the original series. However, the prequel is designed to stand on its own, so you’ll be able to dive right in even if you’re not familiar with the original story.
