‘Betrayal‘, a gripping new espionage thriller from ITV and Mammoth Screen, has officially begun filming in the North West, with Romola Garai (The Hour, Becoming Elizabeth) joining Shaun Evans (Endeavour, Vigil) in the lead roles.
Set in the shadowy world of MI5, the four-part series explores the emotional toll of modern intelligence work and the high-stakes tension where loyalty is never guaranteed. Directed by BAFTA and Emmy-nominated Julian Jarrold (This England, The Crown), the drama is currently shooting in Manchester and Liverpool.
Evans stars as John Hughes, a mid-career MI5 officer navigating a shifting security landscape while facing the unravelling of his personal life. Garai portrays Claire, John’s partner, a GP whose trust is eroded by the constant secrecy and pressure that comes with his work.
Joining them is a strong supporting cast, including:
- Zahra Ahmadi (Beyond Paradise, The Bay) as ambitious MI6 transfer Mehreen Askari-Evans
- Nikki Amuka-Bird (I, Jack Wright, Rumours) as MI5 superior Simone Grant
- Gamba Cole (The Outlaws, Three Little Birds), Omid Djalili (His Dark Materials), Matthew Tennyson (Grantchester), Hayley Tamaddon (Coronation Street), and Anthony Flanagan (House of the Dragon)
Also appearing are Emma Cunniffe (The Long Shadow), Georgina Rylance (Sherlock), Ben Lambert (The Crown), Julia Watson (Doctors), and Julian Wadham (Black Doves), alongside several television newcomers.
Written by acclaimed playwright David Eldridge, the story intensifies when a covert meeting between John and a potential British-Iranian informant ends in tragedy, putting his career and marriage under severe strain. The arrival of Mehreen only deepens the cracks in his professional and personal life.
Betrayal is produced by Irma Inniss (The Bay) and executive produced by Damien Timmer, David Eldridge, Shaun Evans, Julian Jarrold, and Tom Leggett. It was developed by Rebecca Keane, Creative Director at Mammoth Screen.
Commissioned by Polly Hill, ITV’s Director of Drama, and Huw Kennair Jones, ‘Betrayal‘ will premiere on ITV1, STV, ITVX, and STV Player in 2026. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
