Ryan Murphy’s ‘Doctor Odyssey‘ has returned to port, and possibly for the last time, as cast options on the ABC drama have officially expired.
The medical procedural followed Max (played by Joshua Jackson) as the new onboard doctor aboard a luxury cruise ship, where the staff worked hard and played even harder. It was all hands on deck as Max and his small but dedicated medical team navigated unique emergencies, and each other, far from shore.
Joining Joshua Jackson (Fringe, Dawson’s Creek, The Affair) were Don Johnson (Miami Vice, Nash Bridges), Phillipa Soo (Hamilton, Shining Girls, Dopesick), and Sean Teale (The Gifted, Rosaline, Who is Erin Carter?).
Interestingly, the show hasn’t been officially cancelled. However, the cast’s contract options for a second season expired over the weekend, freeing them to pursue other projects. While this leaves the door open for Murphy to potentially revive the series, doing so would require negotiating new deals for Jackson, Johnson, and the rest of the cast. Additionally, the sets have been dismantled, so a return would not happen anytime soon.
Although the show launched with strong ratings, it struggled to maintain momentum and remained at the lower end of ABC’s performance chart. That said, the campy and fun tone helped it perform better on Hulu, where it developed a passionate cult following. Among its vocal supporters was comedian John Oliver, who criticised ABC’s decision not to renew the show, calling it “sexy ER on a boat” and “The Pitt with sharks.”
