HBO Max Orders ‘Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff ‘Stuart Fails To Save The Universe’, Which Goes In A Wildly Unexpected Direction!

by Dave Elliott

We’ve known for a while that a new ‘Big Bang Theory’ spinoff was coming, but I don’t think anyone expected it to go in this wildly different direction!

HBO Max has officially ordered Stuart Fails To Save The Universe, a new comedy series that blends science fiction, multiverse chaos, and offbeat humour, putting the unlikely fan-favourite Stuart Bloom in the spotlight. The show comes from Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, the Emmy-nominated creative team behind the original series.

What started as speculation about a follow-up to ‘The Big Bang Theory’, set in Stuart’s comicbook shop, and was expected to be somewhat similar to the original, has evolved into a genre-bending sci-fi adventure. The plot sees Stuart accidentally triggering a multiverse Armageddon after breaking one of Sheldon and Leonard’s devices, and he’s now the only one who can fix it. As the title implies, things don’t go smoothly.

He’s joined by returning characters, including Lauren Lapkus (as Denise), Brian Posehn (as Bert), and John Ross Bowie (as Barry Kripke), with the story taking them through alternate versions of familiar faces from the original show. According to the official logline, fans can expect a mix of geeky mythology and the humour that defined the original sitcom.

“I wanted to do something radical that would take me out of my comfort zone,” said Chuck Lorre. “Something the characters on ‘The Big Bang Theory’ would have loved, hated, and argued about.”

Zak Penn added, “I was on a vision quest in the most remote parts of the Amazon Rainforest when a carrier pigeon arrived with a note from Chuck Lorre asking if I wanted to help make a show that the characters from ‘Big Bang Theory’ would watch. I couldn’t resist that idea, so I packed up my yurt and hailed the next dirigible out. At the same time, Chuck sent an expedition to locate Bill Prady, who had been frozen with his shield across his chest in a block of arctic ice. The team assembled, we set out to make this insane show, which lives in a universe created by Chuck and Bill. I couldn’t be more honoured to be working with these amazing people.”

Bill Prady summed up the spirit of the new show: “Putting characters we loved into a complex science fiction story with the kind of mythology those characters love while maintaining the comedic elements is incredibly satisfying.”

This isn’t the first expansion of the Big Bang universe. Young Sheldon has already proven the franchise can evolve, but ‘Stuart Fails To Save The Universe’ looks set to take things in a far stranger and more ambitious direction. Packed with fan-favourite characters, comic book energy, and multiverse mayhem, it’s a spinoff that sounds as wild as it does entertaining.

Stuart Fails To Save The Universe’ Season 1 does not yet have a premiere date but will air on HBO Max in the US, and (presumably) on HBO Max in the UK, when the service launches here next year.
