Channel 4 has announced a new six-part drama, ‘Army of Shadows‘, from BAFTA award-winner Ronan Bennett (The Day of the Jackal, MobLand, Top Boy), co-produced by STUDIOCANAL (War of the Worlds, Safe) and Two Cities Television (Blue Lights, Patrick Melrose).
Inspired by Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1969 film and Joseph Kessel’s book, Army of Shadows reimagines the story of resistance in a strikingly different setting. Instead of Nazi-occupied France, Bennett’s new take is set in a near-future authoritarian Britain, under de facto American occupation. The drama follows a former British army officer as he builds a covert resistance cell from scratch, navigating betrayal, propaganda, internment camps and the moral compromises that come with fighting back.
Across six episodes, ‘Army of Shadows’ will chronicle the turbulent birth of a British resistance movement, leading to a climactic political assassination. At its heart lies a timeless question: what would you do if your country were occupied?
Speaking about the project, Bennett said:
“I’m thrilled to be working with the teams at Channel 4, Studio Canal, Two Cities and CANAL+ on such great source material, and I’m delighted to have such strong support from the Melville family. Democracy is once again in clear and present danger. Resistance to fascism is – and must always be – a permanent struggle. This is a story about commitment, resistance and defiance in the coming age.”
Channel 4’s Gemma Boswell, Commissioning Editor for Drama, added:
“Army of Shadows is a gripping and provocative drama that speaks directly to our times. Ronan Bennett’s vision is bold and uncompromising, reimagining a classic story with thrilling and emotional depth.”
M-K Kennedy, Managing Director of STUDIOCANAL Television, described the series as a landmark moment for the company, noting that it is both the first project from their new TV producing arm and a bold reworking of a treasured film from their iconic library.
Two Cities Television’s Stephen Wright also emphasised how timely the story feels:
“Michael and I were inspired to produce a TV version of the Army of Shadows original masterpiece novel and film for the 21st century, where the themes and political tensions are as fascinating as ever but will be delivered through a new lens.”
Laurent Grousset, Jean-Pierre Melville’s nephew and President of the Jean-Pierre Melville Foundation, praised Bennett’s new approach, saying it “brings a complete and surprising new life to the original, without losing its quality.”
‘Army of Shadows’ is a Channel 4 and CANAL+ commission, developed by STUDIOCANAL with Two Cities Television, and will be distributed internationally by STUDIOCANAL across more than 50 countries. Casting news will be revealed at a later date.
‘Army of Shadows‘ does not yet have a premiere date, but will air on Channel 4 in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
