‘The Beast in Me’ Trailer Sees Claire Danes and Matthew Rhys in a Deadly Cat-and-Mouse Thriller

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has unveiled the first trailer for The Beast in Me, an eight-episode psychological thriller starring Claire Danes (Fleishman Is in Trouble, Homeland) and Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason). The tense footage teases a twisted battle of wills between neighbours that blurs the line between fascination and fear, and sets the stage for one of this autumn’s darkest new dramas.

Danes plays Aggie Wiggs, a grieving author who has withdrawn from public life after the loss of her son. Her fragile peace is shattered when real estate mogul Nile Jarvis, played by Rhys, moves in next door. Nile carries the shadow of scandal, once suspected in his wife’s disappearance, and Aggie soon finds herself both horrified and compelled by the man, digging deeper into his past in a hunt that could prove deadly.

The series comes from creator Gabe Rotter (The X-Files) with Howard Gordon (Homeland) as showrunner, who was thrilled to reunite with Danes. Speaking to Tudum, he said:

“She really has that uniquely rare ability to convey the most interior thoughts, and you know what’s going on inside her. There’s a fierce intelligence, but there’s also her vulnerability. She really conveys that.”

Casting Nile was no easy task, but Gordon praised Rhys for stepping into darker territory than usual:

“Not only was I surprised by their chemistry, but I was surprised by how virtuosic he was.”

Behind the camera, writer Daniel Pearle (American Crime Story), director Antonio Campos, and executive producers Jodie Foster, Caroline Baron, and Conan O’Brien join the production team.
