‘Frankenstein’ is alive again, as Netflix unleashes the new trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s gothic reimagining. While the earlier teaser put Oscar Isaac’s (Ex Machina, Inside Llewyn Davis) Victor Frankenstein in the spotlight, this latest look is all about the Creature, brought chillingly to life by Jacob Elordi (Saltburn, Priscilla).
In del Toro’s vision, the Creature isn’t a shambling brute, but something more unsettling: statuesque, beautiful, and fragile, with flashes of terrifying strength. The director describes him as needing “to feel like a baby, and then he needs to feel like a philosopher, like a man.” The trailer captures exactly that contradiction, showing a figure both innocent and vengeful, craving love yet prepared to burn the world when denied it.
This is no generic rehash of Shelley’s monster. Del Toro sets his Creature’s origins in the Crimean War, stitching him together from the frozen corpses of soldiers found on the battlefield. The result is a resurrected soldier haunted by the memories of his body’s former lives. As the footage shows, he stalks ships, endures gunfire, and confronts his maker with quiet menace. His warning to Victor is chilling: “If you are not to award me love, then I will indulge in rage.”
Elordi took inspiration from unusual sources to embody this balance of grace and fury. He studied the Japanese dance form butoh and even observed the movements of his golden retriever to capture a sense of innocence in the Creature’s physicality. The result promises a monster who is as tragic as he is terrifying… classic del Toro territory.
The rest of the cast surrounding Elordi includes Mia Goth (X, Emma) as Elizabeth, Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds, Django Unchained), Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Lars Mikkelsen (The Witcher, Ahsoka), David Bradley (Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Harry Potter), Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), and Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Mank).
Del Toro has called Frankenstein his favourite novel for years, even quoting Shelley during awards speeches. Now, after more than a decade of trying, he finally brings her creation to the screen with his signature blend of romance, tragedy, and horror.
‘Frankenstein’ premieres in select UK cinemas on Friday, 17th October 2025, before arriving on Netflix globally on Friday, 7th November 2025.
