The BBC has officially confirmed the future of ‘Doctor Who’, announcing a brand-new Christmas Special arriving in 2026, written by Russell T Davies, and produced by Bad Wolf with BBC Studios. The announcement also comes as Disney+ confirms it will not continue as a co-production partner beyond The War Between the Land and the Sea.
Despite the end of that global partnership, the BBC says it remains fully committed to the long-running sci-fi adventure and will reveal plans for the next full series “in due course”.
Lindsay Salt, Director of Drama at the BBC, said:
“We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea. The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
Before that festive adventure, fans still have plenty of Whovian treats to enjoy. The War Between the Land and the Sea is set to arrive later this year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, while a brand-new Doctor Who animated series for CBeebies is currently in development to introduce younger viewers to the world of the Doctor.
A Regeneration Twist Worthy Of The Time Vortex
The BBC’s confirmation follows one of the most surprising regenerations in modern Doctor Who history. At the end of Season 2, Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerated, apparently into Billie Piper, marking her first major return to the series since her role as Rose Tyler. The twist immediately sparked mass speculation as to who or what she really is.
In the closing moments of the finale, fans were left guessing whether Piper’s mysterious appearance meant she had become the next Doctor, or if something far stranger was happening. The BBC and the credits offered no clarification, keeping her role completely under wraps.
Speaking about her unexpected comeback, Billie Piper said:
“It’s no secret how much I love this show, and I have always said I would love to return… so to be given the opportunity to step back on that TARDIS one more time was just something I couldn’t refuse. But who, how, why and when, you’ll just have to wait and see.”
Meanwhile, Ncuti Gatwa thanked fans and the production team for their support as he bowed out after two eventful seasons. His run certainly divided opinion… Many enjoyed his performance, while others took issue with the writing, particularly in a finale that was reportedly reworked following his unexpected exit.
The Future Of The Whoniverse
All eyes are now on The War Between the Land and the Sea and the newly announced Christmas special to see what happens next. Will the special finally confirm who or what Billie Piper’s character really is? A new Doctor (which seems unlikely)? A “Bad Wolf” incarnation? The TARDIS in physical form? Or something else entirely? And will it end with yet another regeneration into the next Doctor? As ever with Doctor Who, speculation is half the fun.
With Disney+ stepping away, international distribution will now fall under BBC Studios, which is expected to handle global sales directly. The loss of Disney as a partner will likely reduce the budgets for the series… However, when has that ever been an issue for Whovians? The BBC ran Who for years on its own, and they are perfectly capable of doing it solo again. Doctor Who is very profitable for the BBC. It helps generate commercial income, supports global rights sales, brands the BBC globally, and has strong spin-off value (with merchandise and licensing). As to where it ends up globally is anyone’s guess. I wonder if Netflix has their chequebooks at the ready?…
