Trailer & Premiere: Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson Clash in Netflix’s Wild West Saga ‘The Abandons’

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has saddled up for a full-throttle Western showdown, unveiling the trailer for The Abandons, the highly anticipated new drama starring Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Gillian Anderson (Sex Education, The Crown, The X-Files). The series rides onto screens this December, and if the trailer is anything to go by, the frontier has never been more treacherous or more personal.

Created by Christopher Keyser (The Society) and executive produced alongside Craig Yahata (Sons of Anarchy, Fargo), ‘The Abandons’ explores the raw underbelly of America’s untamed West through the lens of two powerful matriarchs. At the heart of the story is Fiona Nolan (Headey), a fierce, faith-driven woman who has forged her own family out of society’s forgotten souls: outcasts, orphans, and wanderers who have banded together to carve out a life in silver-rich Jasper Hollow. But their fragile peace shatters when the ruthless Van Ness mining dynasty, led by Anderson’s calculating Constance Van Ness, sets its sights on their land.

What follows is a violent and deeply emotional feud between two women who mirror each other more than they would ever admit. Both are survivors, both are leaders, and both are willing to destroy everything to protect what they hold dear. Keyser and Yahata’s script goes beyond the usual Western myth to explore the moral contradictions of faith, family, and survival in a lawless world.

The ensemble cast is packed with talent. Nick Robinson (Maid, Love, Simon) plays Elias, Fiona’s adopted son whose loyalty begins to falter under her increasingly harsh choices. Diana Silvers (Booksmart, Space Force) portrays Dahlia, a defiant young woman unafraid to stand up to the Van Ness family. Lamar Johnson (The Last of Us) appears as Albert, the quiet protector of Fiona’s clan, while Natalia del Riego (Promised Land) plays Lilla Belle, a small but fierce fighter with a painful past.

On the opposing side, Lucas Till (X-Men, MacGyver) stars as Garret Van Ness, Constance’s ambitious heir, struggling to earn his place in his mother’s empire. Aisling Franciosi (The Nightingale, God’s Creatures) takes on the role of Trish Van Ness, the family’s outsider torn between loyalty to her bloodline and her growing sense of justice. The cast also includes Toby Hemingway (The Crossing), Michiel Huisman (Rebel Moon, Game of Thrones), Michael Greyeyes (Wild Indian), and Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy).

The series promises the sweeping grandeur of classic Westerns combined with the moral tension of modern prestige dramas such as Deadwood or Godless. Every frame of the trailer hints at gunfights, betrayals, and sweeping desert vistas, all underscored by a story of found family, power, and revenge.

Headey and Anderson’s on-screen face-off looks set to be one of the year’s most compelling rivalries. Both bring a fierce energy and emotional depth to their roles, ensuring that this isn’t simply a battle over land, but a reckoning between two women who refuse to yield.

The Abandons’ Season 1 premieres Thursday, 4th December 2025 on Netflix.
