Apple TV has greenlit ‘Safe Houses’, a new eight-episode international espionage thriller from Emmy Award-winning showrunner Gideon Raff (Homeland, The Spy), inspired by the acclaimed novel by Dan Fesperman.
Set in the tense aftermath of a high-ranking CIA officer’s murder in Madrid, ‘Safe Houses’ follows Sofia Jiménez, a fugitive agent accused of the killing, and Ambassador Elizabeth Winthrop, the victim’s widow. As each woman investigates from opposite sides, they uncover a vast conspiracy capable of shaking the global balance of power.
The series comes from Apple Studios and global independent studio wiip, the team behind Mare of Easttown and The Summer I Turned Pretty. Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders, Robin Hood) will direct the opening block, while Raff directs several episodes himself. He also serves as executive producer alongside Alexandra Milchan, Paul Lee and David Flynn for wiip. Mike Seid, who developed the project with Raff, joins as co-executive producer with Adam Berkowitz, and Sara Gonzalo produces. Author Dan Fesperman will act as consulting producer.
Raff has built an impressive career crafting emotionally charged and politically complex spy dramas. In 2010, he created the acclaimed Israeli series Prisoners of War, which ran for two seasons and became the foundation for Showtime’s Homeland. Working with Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, Raff co-developed and co-wrote the pilot for Homeland, later serving as an executive producer throughout its run. The trio’s work on the series premiere earned them the Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series in 2012.
Following Homeland, Raff continued exploring the world of espionage with the bilingual miniseries The Spy for Netflix and Canal+, starring Sacha Baron Cohen as real-life Israeli spy Eli Cohen. The show cemented Raff’s reputation for blending taut, character-driven storytelling with real-world intelligence intrigue, a combination ‘Safe Houses’ looks ready to expand on.
With its global setting, layered female leads, and veteran creative team, ‘Safe Houses’ joins Apple TV’s growing list of prestige thrillers, following titles like ‘Slow Horses’, ‘Tehran’, and ‘Losing Alice’.
‘Safe Houses does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Apple TV in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
