Ólafur Darri Ólafsson cast as Thor in Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ series

by Dave Elliott

Prime Video’s long-gestating TV adaptation of God of War has added another heavyweight to its cast, with Ólafur Darri Ólafsson signing on to play Thor in the upcoming series from Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. The series is currently in pre-production and gearing up to shoot in Vancouver.

Ólafsson will portray the God of Thunder as a physically imposing but deeply troubled figure. Once a loyal warrior of Asgard and his father’s right-hand man, this version of Thor is haunted by the consequences of a war long past. He has withdrawn into alcohol and isolation, pushing his wife and children away, even as the immense power and danger of the God of Thunder still simmer just beneath the surface.

The series is based on PlayStation’s hugely popular mythological video game franchise God of War, which has already been given a two-season order. The story follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, wife and mother, while struggling with what it truly means to be a god, and a human.

Previously announced casting includes Ryan Hurst as Kratos and Max Parker as Heimdall. Behind the camera, Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E. O. Toye is set to direct the first two episodes. The series is being overseen by showrunner Ronald D. Moore, with an extensive executive producing team that includes Maril Davis, Cory Barlog and Naren Shankar.

‘God of War’ is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions, with casting now underway as the project moves closer to cameras rolling.

God of War’ does not yet have a premiere date but will stream on Prime Video in the UK. If I want to keep track of this or any other shows, I can add them via our Never Miss system, and I’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
