‘Secret Service‘ has landed its first proper trailer, with ITV unveiling a tense 60-second look at the new espionage thriller led by Gemma Arterton (Funny Woman, The King’s Man).
Based on the bestselling novel by Tom Bradby, the five-part drama stars Arterton as senior MI6 officer Kate Henderson, who uncovers intelligence suggesting a high-ranking British politician could be operating as a Russian asset. As suspicion spreads and trust begins to collapse, Kate finds herself pulled into a dangerous conspiracy where the personal and political become increasingly impossible to separate. ITV is currently billing the series as “coming soon,” with no exact premiere date confirmed yet.
Alongside Arterton, the cast includes Rafe Spall (The Salisbury Poisonings), Mark Stanley (Happy Valley), Rochenda Sandall (Line of Duty), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), Roger Allam (Endeavour), Amaka Okafor (Bodies), Avi Nash (The Walking Dead), Aoife Hinds (Dune: Prophecy), Alma Prelec (The Chelsea Detective) and Khalid Abdalla (The Crown).
The drama reunites Bradby with Oscar-winning director James Marsh, who helms the first three episodes, while Farren Blackburn directs the final two. All five episodes are co-written by Bradby and Jemma Kennedy, with Gail Egan producing for Potboiler Productions. Filmed on location in Malta and London, the series looks to have a strong international feel even from this short first trailer.
From the footage released so far, ‘Secret Service’ looks like it’s aiming for a tense, contemporary spy thriller, mixing political intrigue, personal jeopardy and a very timely Russia-focused storyline. With Arterton front and centre, and a cast packed with familiar faces, this could be one of ITV’s standout homegrown thrillers this year.
