‘Prisoner’ Renewed For Season 2 At Sky With Izuka Hoyle Returning

by Dave Elliott

Sky has confirmed that Prisoner will return for a second season, with Izuka Hoyle (Boiling Point, Big Boys) reprising her role as prison transport officer Amber Todd.

The Sky Original action thriller comes from Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated writer Matt Charman (Hostage, Bridge of Spies), and will return for a new six-part season after a successful debut run on Sky and NOW.

Season one saw Amber tasked with escorting Tibor, played by Tahar Rahim (The Serpent, The Mauritanian), a trained killer and high-value inmate, to court so he could testify against his elite crime syndicate. Naturally, because this is television and not a pleasant day out in a secure van, things went very wrong. When the convoy was brutally ambushed, Amber and Tibor were left handcuffed together, on the run, and forced into a deeply uneasy alliance.

The first season has already seen strong early viewing across all six episodes, with the show described by TV Times as “a real action-packed treat”, while Sunday Times Culture praised the cast as “a smart blend of rising stars – Izuka Hoyle, who is excellent – and old-guard legends.”

Season two will expand the tense and morally complicated world of ‘Prisoner’, with Amber back in uniform, but very much not back to normal. Still carrying the scars of what happened in the first season, and struggling to hold her family together, Amber is given another high-pressure assignment: escorting a polarising US academic turned notorious killer for extradition.

The woman’s case has divided public opinion, but things take an even darker turn when there is an attempted execution from within law enforcement. Amber is framed for murder, forcing her into a new fight for survival and challenging everything she stands for.

The new season is once again created and written by showrunner Matt Charman, who is joined by Sophie Petzal as writer. Executive producers are Matt Charman, Foz Allan, Sophie Petzal and Adrian Sturges for Sky Studios.

‘Prisoner’ is produced by Binocular in association with Sky Studios. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution is handling international sales.

Prisoner‘ Season 2 does not yet have a premiere date but will air on Sky in the UK and Ireland. Season 1 is available now on Sky and streaming service NOW.
