Fans of small-town murder mysteries have another crime drama to add to the watchlist, as both seasons of ‘Murder in a Small Town’ are heading to Netflix UK this August, marking the show’s UK premiere.
Based on the Edgar Award-winning novels by L.R. Wright, the drama stars Rossif Sutherland (Reign, The Handmaid’s Tale) as Karl Alberg, a detective who leaves big-city police work behind and moves to the seemingly idyllic coastal town of Gibsons. Of course, given the title of the series, the peaceful reset does not entirely go to plan…
Karl quickly discovers that the gentle seaside community has more than its share of secrets, forcing him to call on all the skills that made him a world-class detective as murders continue to wash up on his shore. Kristin Kreuk (Smallville, Beauty and the Beast) stars as Cassandra Lee, a local librarian who becomes Karl’s muse, foil and romantic interest.
The first season also features appearances from James Cromwell (Succession, Babe), Stana Katic (Castle, Absentia), Paula Patton (Precious, The Perfect Match) and Noah Reid (Schitt’s Creek). Season 2 expands Karl’s jurisdiction and caseload, while adding Marcia Gay Harden (The Morning Show, Mystic River) as Mayor Christie Holman, a popular local doctor and skilled political operator who has a habit of complicating life for both Karl and Cassandra.
Both existing seasons will land on Netflix together, so UK viewers will be able to jump straight through the story without waiting for the second batch of episodes.
There is also more to come. ‘Murder in a Small Town’ has already been renewed for a third season, with Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk returning, while Peter Gallagher (The O.C., Grace and Frankie) joins the cast as a new series regular. Season 3 is due to arrive in 2027.
So, the Netflix arrival gives UK viewers plenty of time to get acquainted with Karl, Cassandra and the apparently rather lethal residents of Gibsons before the next round of murders begins.
