The BBC has released a batch of first-look images from ‘This City is Ours‘ Series 2, as James Nelson-Joyce and Hannah Onslow prepare to return to Liverpool’s criminal underworld this autumn on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
The new pictures also give us our first look at the two major additions to the cast. Shaun Evans (Until I Kill You, Endeavour) joins as Ozzie Thompson, an old-school gangster from Ronnie’s era who has recently been released from prison, while Álvaro Morte (Money Heist, Immaculate, The Wheel of Time) plays Felipe Guzman, a member of the Colombian cartel and younger brother of Ricardo.
And, given what happened to Ricardo at the end of ‘This City is Ours’ Series 1, Felipe’s arrival probably isn’t going to make life any easier for Michael Kavanagh…
Series 2 picks up with Michael and Diana having barely arrived in Spain before they are dragged back into the fold and forced to answer questions surrounding Ricardo’s death. Meanwhile, back in Liverpool, tensions continue to simmer amongst the remaining members of the gang, while Ozzie arrives looking for compensation from the firm.
Alongside James Nelson-Joyce as Michael Kavanagh and Hannah Onslow as Diana Williams, the returning cast includes Jack McMullen as Jamie Phelan, Mike Noble as Banksey, Julie Graham as Elaine Phelan, Laura Aikman as Rachel Duffy, Kevin Harvey as Bobby Duffy, Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Cheryl Crawford, Darci Shaw as Melissa Sullivan, Adam Abbou as Freddie and Bobby Schofield as Bonehead. Sean Bean played murdered gang boss Ronnie Phelan in the first series.
The crime drama proved a sizeable hit for the BBC when it launched in March 2025. The first series has averaged 6.1 million viewers to date, while its opening episode has been watched by more than 8.2 million people, more than four times its original overnight audience of 1.9 million. Nearly three million viewers also streamed the finale before its BBC One broadcast.
The series picked up BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Drama and Leading Actor for James Nelson-Joyce, who also won Best Breakthrough Talent at the RTS North West Awards 2025 for his performance.
Created and written by Stephen Butchard, ‘This City is Ours’ returns with another eight 60-minute episodes, with Robbie O’Neill writing an additional instalment. Saul Dibb returns as lead director alongside returning director John Hayes and newcomer Chris Baugh.
The drama is produced by Left Bank Pictures for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, with filming taking place in and around Liverpool alongside additional production in Spain. Sony Pictures Television handles international distribution.
