Jensen Ackles (Supernatural) is swapping superheroes for serial killers, as he signs on to lead and executive produce MGM+ crime thriller ‘Rules of Prey’.
Based on the first novel in John Sandford’s long-running Prey book series, the eight-episode drama follows Lucas Davenport, a former Minneapolis Police Department detective who is drawn out of seclusion and back into law enforcement by a string of baffling murders designed to send a message specifically to him.
When an ingenious serial killer begins targeting Minneapolis citizens, Davenport’s brilliant but unconventional approach sparks an intense psychological duel between two equally formidable minds. As he attempts to decipher the murderer’s twisted moral code and personal vendetta, Davenport must risk everything to stop a predator who views their conflict as the ultimate game.
Ackles’ character is described as a “righteous avenging angel” whose sharp mind, unconventional methods and unwillingness to let the law stand in the way of justice resulted in his departure from the police force. So, probably not someone particularly concerned about completing the correct paperwork before kicking down a door.
‘Rules of Prey’ is created by Bruce Terris (Perpetual Grace, LTD, Patriot), who also serves as showrunner and executive producer. Daniel Sackheim (House, NYPD Blue, True Detective, Ozark) will direct the opening two episodes and executive produce, with filming beginning in Toronto this month.

The series further expands Ackles’ relationship with Amazon MGM Studios. He is currently starring in and producing ‘Vought Rising’, the upcoming prequel to ‘The Boys’, which sees him reprise his role as Soldier Boy. He also previously led and executive produced ‘Countdown’ for Prime, and will return as Russell Shaw in Season 4 of CBS drama ‘Tracker’.
MGM Television and Take 5 Productions produce the drama, with Ackles, Terris, Charles Gogolak, Matt Leipzig, Howard Braunstein, Michael Jaffe, John Requa, Glenn Ficarra and John Weber among the executive producers. Sandford serves as co-producer.
‘Rules of Prey’ does not yet have a premiere date, but is confirmed to air on MGM+ in the UK, US, Ireland and several other international territories.
