A first day on the job is stressful enough without getting caught in a bank heist. That’s the welcome awaiting a new recruit in ‘Code Zero‘, a six-part police thriller commissioned by ITV and starring Faye Marsay (‘Andor’, ‘Adolescence’).
Marsay plays Police Sergeant Laura Collier, a pragmatic, funny, no-nonsense officer tasked with showing new recruit Cal Walters, played by Sekou Diaby (‘Animol’), the ropes. Unfortunately, the ropes lead straight into a meticulously planned bank robbery. As Laura and her team investigate, the fallout begins to reach into her own life in ways she could never have expected.
The title refers to the most urgent call a police officer can make: a signal that they are in immediate danger and need help at once. A Code Zero call in the opening episode sends officers racing to find Cal and the stolen money, with consequences for everyone who responds. That’s quite a first shift.
ITV’s Director of Drama Polly Hill says: “This is a story that unfolds at breathtaking pace, as a police drama, and a robbery that doesn’t quite go to plan.”
The cast also includes Sion Daniel Young (‘Lost Boys and Fairies’) as Darrell Haiton, Brendan Coyle (‘Toxic Town’) as Phil Baynes, Rachel Shenton (‘All Creatures Great and Small’) as Gemma Chapman, and Aneurin Barnard (‘Dunkirk’) as Ferdie Kestevan.
They are joined by Anthony Welsh (‘The Flatshare’) as Ed Collier, Steven Cree (‘Down Cemetery Road’) as Doyle, Libby Mai (‘Youth’) as Twitch, Adam Fidusiewicz (‘Vigil’) as Ivan, Pooky Quesnel (‘Tip Toe’) as Leanne Baynes, and Kerim Hassan (‘My Fault’) as Charlie Briggs. Also appearing are Christine Adams (‘Hijack’) as Commander Harker, Vikash Bhai (‘Virdee’) as DI Anderson, Kevin Eldon (‘Rings of Power’) as Terry Underwood, Martin Trenaman (‘The Inbetweeners’) as Roy Prescott, Steven Meo (‘Waiting for the Out’) as Simon Peters, and Lorraine Burroughs (‘Sweetpea’) as Trisha Walters.
‘Code Zero’ is the first original television drama created by James Hall, who has previously written for ‘Death in Paradise’ and co-created ‘Return to Paradise’. Two Brothers Pictures, whose credits include ‘The Tourist’ and ‘Fleabag’, produces the series. Ashley Way directs the first three episodes, with Claire Winyard directing the remaining three.
Filming is taking place in Cardiff and South Wales. ITV has yet to announce when ‘Code Zero‘ will premiere.
