Helen Webb is heading back into trouble this November. Netflix has released a new trailer and confirmed the return date for ‘Black Doves’ Season 2, bringing its spy thriller back with political danger for Helen, legal trouble for Sam, and a fresh conspiracy threatening the covert organisation at the centre of it all.
Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game) returns as Helen, who is still passing British state secrets to the Black Doves. Her cover is about to get even more precarious: her husband Wallace, played by Andrew Buchan (‘Code of Silence’), is preparing to become Prime Minister. Living under the same roof as the man heading for Downing Street while secretly working for someone else sounds like the sort of situation that could go wrong before breakfast.
And Helen is losing the person who usually helps keep that double life on track. Her handler Mrs Reed, played by Sarah Lancashire (‘Happy Valley’), is caught up in a plot against her position within the Black Doves and goes missing. As creator Joe Barton puts it: “She’s literally the spy at the heart of government, so she’s kind of reached the pinnacle of where she can get to. But at the same time as that happens, her handler, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), goes missing. So Helen’s in this very precarious situation, suddenly, and without her professional ally.”
Meanwhile, Sam, played by Ben Whishaw (‘This Is Going to Hurt’), has fallen a long way from his days as a high-end triggerman. There are lonely drinks in Soho, low-rate hits and, Barton reveals, legal trouble that has landed him in a deal with a mysterious man who gets him out of prison. Helen and Sam eventually find their way back to each other as they try to unravel the plot involving Reed, with both their loyalties and the people they love on the line.
The first season ended with the two friends surviving a bloody Christmas showdown. Helen returned to family life with Wallace, although he still had questions about her past. Sam’s decision to kill crime boss Alex Clark and her son Trent to protect Helen pulled him deeper into the criminal world, forcing him to leave Michael behind. So when Season 2 begins, neither of them is exactly starting from a clean slate.
The trailer also brings back Eleanor, played by Gabrielle Creevy (‘The Guest’), Williams, played by Ella Lily Hyland (‘Towards Zero’), and Lenny, played by Kathryn Hunter (Poor Things). New faces include Laila, an anarchic Black Doves agent played by Ambika Mod (‘One Day’); Mr. Conteh, a senior figure in the organisation with questionable motives, played by Babou Ceesay (‘Alien: Earth’); and Patrick, whose mysterious organisation may offer Sam a way out, played by Sam Riley (Islands). Neve Campbell (Scream) joins as US defence envoy Cecile Mason.
The wider cast includes Agnes O’Casey (‘Star City’), Sylvia Hoeks (Blade Runner 2049), Goran Kostic (Canary Black) and Samuel Barnett (‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency’). Barton returns as writer and creator, with Julian Farino (‘Giri/Haji’) and Kieron Hawkes (‘Red Eye’) directing for SISTER Pictures.
Between Wallace’s possible move into Number 10, Reed’s disappearance and Sam’s dubious new arrangement, the trailer suggests Helen and Sam will have even fewer people they can trust this time. They might want to enjoy the Champagne while they can.
