It was billed as a limited series, but apparently Netflix has decided there might be a little more beast left in ‘The Beast in Me‘. Following nine Emmy nominations, two wins and a sizeable audience, the streamer has ordered a second season, with Claire Danes (Homeland) returning as author Aggie Wiggs.
The first season followed Aggie as she became dangerously entangled with her wealthy new neighbour, Nile Jarvis, played by Matthew Rhys (The Americans). What began as an interest in a man suspected of involvement in his wife’s disappearance turned into a rather more personal problem. It told a complete story, which makes the renewal an intriguing one: just what does Aggie get herself mixed up in next?
Netflix is keeping that answer under wraps for now. There are no plot details or additional cast announcements yet, although development is underway. Howard Gordon (Homeland, 24) returns as writer and will share showrunner duties with Daniel Pearle (Accused). Gordon has also signed a deal to develop new series exclusively for Netflix.
Gordon has said the team would only revisit ‘The Beast in Me’ if they found a story worthy of its first season. They clearly believe they have one, and the decision probably became a little easier after the show debuted at number one on Netflix’s global TV chart, reached the top 10 in 88 countries and drew 43 million views in its first seven weeks.
Its awards run gave Netflix another reason to take a second look. Danes was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series, while Rhys won the corresponding Lead Actor award. Composers Sean Callery and Sara Barone also won for the show’s dramatic score.
The original limited series label may have expired, but Aggie’s troubles evidently haven’t. ‘The Beast in Me‘ Season 2 is coming to Netflix. A premiere date has not yet been announced.
