U&alibi has set an October UK premiere for Season 4 of ‘Dark Winds‘, bringing Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee back for another mystery. This time, the investigation will take them beyond the reservation and into 1970s Los Angeles, where a missing teenager and a killer with connections to organised crime give the officers rather more to worry about than California traffic.
The eight-episode fourth season sees Zahn McClarnon (‘Fargo’, ‘Westworld’) return as Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, alongside Kiowa Gordon (‘The Red Road’, ‘Roswell, New Mexico’) as Sergeant Jim Chee. Jessica Matten (‘Tribal’, ‘Burden of Truth’) also returns as Bernadette Manuelito, with Deanna Allison (‘Accused’, ‘Edge of America’) as Emma Leaphorn.
For anyone yet to venture into ‘Dark Winds’, the mystery drama follows members of the Navajo Tribal Police as they investigate increasingly violent crimes against the backdrop of reservation life in the 1970s. However, solving the case is only part of the job. Each investigation exposes old wounds, drawing the officers into personal demons, family trauma and the collective history of the community they serve. Getting to the truth rarely means leaving everything else neatly tied up.
The opening episode of Season 4 finds Leaphorn and Chee searching for a student who has run away from boarding school. Meanwhile, Manuelito is considering a return to the Navajo Tribal Police. As if a missing-person investigation were not enough to keep everyone occupied, a menacing killer arrives on the reservation looking for someone closely connected to the case.
That search develops into a race to find a missing Navajo girl, taking Leaphorn, Chee and Manuelito to Los Angeles. The change of setting brings the officers into the orbit of an obsessive killer with links to organised crime, expanding the investigation well beyond their familiar territory. It is quite the change of scenery, although presumably nobody will have much time for sightseeing.
Among the new faces this season is Isabel DeRoy-Olson (‘Fancy Dance’) as Billie Tsosie, a resourceful Navajo teenager whose wish to connect with her people outside boarding school puts her in danger. Franka Potente (‘Run Lola Run’, ‘The Bourne Supremacy’) joins as Irene Vaggan, while Chaske Spencer (‘Blindspot’, ‘The Twilight Saga’) plays Sonny, a recruiter drawing young Native American men into a Los Angeles crime ring.
There is also Titus Welliver (‘Bosch’, ‘Bosch: Legacy’) as Dominic McNair, a crime boss dealing in drugs and stolen luxury goods. After years of watching him investigate criminals, seeing Welliver on the other side of the law should be an interesting switch.
Based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels, ‘Dark Winds’ was created by Graham Roland, with John Wirth serving as showrunner. The fourth season also marks Zahn McClarnon’s television directorial debut, adding another job to his duties as the show’s lead and executive producer.
For UK viewers, the new season will be available on demand through Sky, Virgin Media and NOW. U&alibi is a pay-TV channel, so despite being part of the UKTV family, its programmes are not available to catch up on the free streaming service, U.
