So we may have only recently had the Grand National, and i’m sure many of you out there maybe had a little flutter at the bookies or taken part in an office sweepstake. That got me thinking… Horses are all well and good, but what other rather more geeky things are out there to bet on? Should also say, it need not cost you either, if you take a look at the Free Bets App, or go to Freebets.co.uk, you can pick up… well… free bets like this Paddy Power Casino £25 Free Bet… Kinda does what it says in the name really! :D
The Next Doctor…
The first geek bet that caught my eye was over at paddypower.com, who are running an intriguing list of names for potential Doctor Who replacements when Peter Capaldi decides to hang up the TARDIS – Ben Daniels is currently in the lead at 15/2, with Ben Whishaw, Russel Tovey and Robert Carlyle all not too far behind at 10/1.
Top Gear Bets
Another show a number of sites are taking bets on is of course ‘Top Gear‘ as the search continues for a host to replace Jeremy Clarkson… And seemingly Hammond and May, give that they have now both ruled out doing the show without him. The best odds seem to be on either Dermot O’Leary & Philip Glenister, with Jodie Kidd, Guy Martin, and Sue Perkins also in the running. Slightly further down the list you also find Stephen Fry. I’d love to see ‘Gene Hunt’ doing Top Gear, and Glenister does a great job on Channel 4’s ‘For The Love Of Cars’. However, the idea of seeing a light and fluffy version of Top Gear, with Fry being lovely about all the cars they have on does also have a certain appeal! ;)
Film Bets
Moving from TV to film, there are a number of interesting bets out there at the moment for some of the big upcoming movies. Fancy a flutter on whether an Oscar will be awarded to J. J. Abrams for Star Wars: The Force Awakes? You can currently get odds of 8/1 that he will. It’s a shame they don’t give out Oscars for trailers, because if they did, The Force Awakes should win it faster than the Millennium Falcon on the Kessel Run.
You can also take bets on who will be the next James Bond (Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, and Henry Cavill leading the pack on that), and who will do the next Bond theme – Sam Smith and Radiohead seem to be the favourites there… Should say, Sam Smith OR Radiohead, although that would be an interesting collaboration!
So there you have it. If you’re a geek who fancies a flutter, there’s lots of things to choose from, without having to get interested in all that kicking balls around and horses malarkey. ;)
