You’ve heard of “Binge Watching”, now Netflix has coined a new term – “Binge Racing”. In a rare look behind the wizard’s curtain that is the streaming services viewing stats, Netflix has revealed a number of their customers aren’t just slowly binging through shows, but racing through entire series within 24 hours of launch!
According to the company, 8.4 million members have “Binge Raced” through a season of a show at some point on the service, and it’s increasing. Between 2013 and 2016 the number of people who finished a series on the day of launch increased more than 20 times over.
Whilst it’s easy to assume these are just couch potatoes who spend all their time watching tv, but Netflix refutes that. It’s people streaming on phones, making the most of their commute, embracing lunch breaks, treadmill pass-times, well as, of course, settling down on the sofa – the binge is no longer just for end o the day. For these superfans of shows, the social pride and fear of missing out (FOMO) has reached its peak, with viewers desperate not to be behind in the conversation.
“There’s a unique satisfaction that comes from being the first to finish a story – whether it’s the final page of a book or the last, climactic moments of your favourite TV show,” said Brian Wright, Netflix Vice President, Original Series. “Netflix allows you to watch in a way you never could before, and there’s nothing better than seeing a show engage our members and ignite a passion for viewing.”
What’s rather interesting in the lists below, is that it’s not just the half-hour shows like ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ and ‘F is for Family’ that are getting ploughed through at breakneck speed. The hourlong+ dramas such as ‘Marvel’s The Defenders’, ‘Orange is the New Black’ and ‘Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’ are high on the lists, both in the UK and worldwide.
On a personal note, as a massive ‘Gilmore Girls’ fan, it’s heartening to see that show high on both the UK and Worldwide lists… Those rumours of Netflix being extremely keen to make another season seem to be true based on these stats!
