ABC Gives Pilot Order To ‘NYPD Blue’ Sequel

ABC is looking to bring back one of the most iconic cop dramas of all time, ‘NYPD Blue’.

The new version of the show would be a direct sequel to the original and follows Theo, the son of Dennis Franz’s Detective Andy Sipowicz. It would seem Franz won’t be making an appearance in the new version of the drama, as the story follows Theo working at the 15th squad and trying to earn his detective shield whilst investigating his father’s murder. Franz was apparently offered the opportunity to return but is happily retired at this point, so declined.

The character of Theo did appear in the original show, played by young actor Austin Majors. He is the son of Sipowicz and ADA Sylvia Costas (played Sharon Lawrence), who was killed off in Season 6.

The sequel comes from Matt Olmstead, Nicholas Wootton and Jesse Bochco (son of the original series co-creator, Steven Bocho), all of whom were producers on the original show. Olmstead’s other work includes writing/producing on the ‘Chicago’ franchise and ‘Lie to Me’, whilst Wootton worked on ‘Chuck’, ‘Prison Break’ and ‘Scorpion’. Jesse Bochco is a producer/director who has worked on ‘Murder in the First’, ‘Prison Break’‘Agents of SHIELD’. He also directed episodes of the original ‘NYPD Blue’. Steven Bocho is said to have given his blessing to the sequel before he passed away earlier this year.

The original ‘NYPD Blue’ ran for 12 seasons and 260 episodes from 1993-2005 with a cast including Dennis Franz, David Caruso, Jimmy Smits, James McDaniel, Gordon Clapp, Henry Simmons and Mark-Paul Gosselaar. It was nominated for a staggering 84 Emmy Awards over it’s run, picking up awards for Best Actor and Best Drama. It was frequently lauded with critical acclaim for its realistic and gritty protrayal of the real lives of police officers, on and off duty.

The ‘NYPD Blue’ sequel has a pilot production commitment from ABC, so may not go to the distance, but it feels like it should be a strong contender to land a series order. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
