‘Stargirl’ Cast 3 Members Of Injustice Society
The recent casting news for ‘Stargirl‘ has focused mainly on the heroes, but heroes need villains, and DC Universe has announced the first three to be cast. Joy Osmanski will play Tigress, whilst Neil Hopkins takes the role of Sportsmaster, with Nelson Lee starring as Dragon King.
‘Stargirl’ follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger – ‘School of Rock’) who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series.
However, the Justice Society will have a rival in the aptly named Injustice Society. The group first appeared in All Star Comics back in the late 1940s, but have been through various iterations over the years. Making up the DC Universe version will be Neil Hopkins as Lawrence “Crusher” Crock, aka the Sportsmaster. He sees his criminal pursuits as a game to win – and his competitors as targets to kill. The only thing more important to Crock than ‘the game’ is his family.
Hopkins is probably best known for his role as Liam in ‘Lost‘, but has popped up in various series over the years. He was a series regular as Noah on the drama ‘Matador‘, and has guested on a host of shows including ‘The Good Wife’, ‘Code Black’, ‘For The People’, ‘Grimm’ and ‘Bones’.
Nelson Lee portrays Dragon King, a deadly and mysterious hooded man. This controversial scientist has been experimenting on himself and his victims since the 1940s.
Lee’s most recent series regular gig saw him star as Sheldon in ‘Ten Days in the Valley’. He’s no stranger to comic book dramas, having played Shen in the underrated ‘Blade: The Series’. Other guest roles include ‘Sneaky Pete’, ‘Lethal Weapon’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’ and ‘Hawaii Five-0’.
Lastly, Joy Osmanski takes on the part of Tigress. Protecting and providing for her family, Paula Brooks hunts the world’s most dangerous game – humans – as the Tigress.
Osmanski will be familiar to fans of Netflix’s ‘Santa Clarita Diet’ where she stars as Alondra. Additionally, she starred in ‘Devious Maids’ and ‘The Fosters’. Other guest parts include ‘Will & Grace’, ‘Shameless (US)’, ‘Lucifer’ and ‘iZombie’. She is also the voice of Failsafe in ‘Destiny 2’.
The trio will battle the recently announced JSA members including Joel McHale (‘Community’, ‘The Great Indoors’) who takes the role of Starman, Lou Ferrigno Jr. (‘S.W.A.T’) who will play Hourman, Brian Stapf (The Walking Dead’, ‘Valor’) as Wildcat, and Henry Thomas (‘The Haunting of Hill House’, ‘E.T.’) as Dr. Mid-Nite. Anjelika Washington (‘Runaways’, ‘Young Sheldon’) has also been cast in an as-yet-unnamed part.
‘Stargirl‘ will be released on DC Universe in the US on August 9th, 2019, but currently does not have a UK broadcaster. However, Netflix UK has picked up the ‘Titans’ series for broadcast over here in January 2019, so it would seem possible they may go for this too. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
