Geektown Awards – Best New & Returning Comedy Series

The next set of awards we have for you revolve around the shows which have had you laughing the most over the past 12 months. Both the New Comedy and Returning Comedy categories had comfortable winners, but the bronze and silver places did bring up some interesting runners-up. We’ll start with the New Comedy series which had you chuckling the most.

Best New Comedy Series

Nominees: After Life – Netflix, Brassic – Sky One, Living With Yourself – Netflix, Russian Doll – Netflix, Sex Education – Netflix, This Time With Alan Partridge – BBC Two, Upright – Sky One, What We Do In The Shadows – BBC Two

Bronze: Brassic – Sky One

Silver: What We Do In The Shadows – BBC Two

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: After Life – Netflix

It’s another gold for Netflix, as the unstoppable Ricky Gervais takes a clear lead with his utterly brilliant dark comedy After Life. The series follows Tony (Gervais), a man who had a perfect life. But after his wife Lisa dies, Tony changes. After contemplating taking his own life, he decides instead to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he likes from now on. He thinks it’s like a Super Power – not caring about himself or anyone else – but it turns out to be tricky when everyone is trying to save the nice guy they used to know.

Despite the dark nature of the premise, it’s possibly Ricky’s most interesting and poignant work to date. Equal parts funny and heartbreakingly tragic, it’s the type of show which could only really come from someone like Gervais.

After LifeSeason 2 is coming in 2020.

Best Returning Comedy Series

Nominees: Atypical – Netflix, Barry – Sky Atlantic, Brooklyn Nine-Nine – E4, Derry Girls – Channel 4, Fleabag – BBC Three/BBC One, Grace and Frankie – Netflix, Silicon Valley – Sky Atlantic, The Good Place – Netflix, The Orville – FOX (UK), Veep – Sky Atlantic

Bronze: The Good Place – Netflix

Silver: Derry Girls – Channel 4

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Fleabag – BBC Three/BBC One

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s critically acclaimed comedy Fleabag, which returned last year for Season 2, comfortably takes the gold. Season 2 began with an uncomfortable family dinner to celebrate Godmother (Olivia Colman) and Dad’s (Bill Paterson) engagement. However, the person who Fleabag (Waller-Bridge) finds herself intrigued by is Godmother’s new Priest, played by the amazing Andrew Scott.

Much like the first season, this second outing has picked up armfuls of awards and critical acclaim, including winning 6 of the 11 Emmys for which it was nominated. Whilst Waller-Bridge has stated that is it for the show, she has also commented she likes the idea of returning to the character, maybe, in her 50s, so we have a bit of a wait!
