Geektown Awards – Best Limited Series

The next category you voted in was ‘Best Limited Series’. We define a ‘limited series’ as a show which either is a short run, one-off production or has a storyline which completely changes from season to season, such as an anthology series.

We are in a golden age of high-quality tv drama right now, but I didn’t think a show could match the massive response from last year’s winner, ‘Bodyguard’, which took 40% of the vote… How wrong I was… There was a clear frontrunner from very early on which this year, ended up taking nearly 50% of the votes!

Best Limited Series

Nominees: Catch 22 – Channel 4, Catherine the Great – Sky Atlantic, Chernobyl – Sky Atlantic, Escape At Dannemora – Sky Atlantic, Good Omens – Amazon Prime, MotherFatherSon – BBC Two, Unbelievable – Netflix, World On Fire – BBC One

Bronze: Unbelievable – Netflix

Silver: Good Omens – Amazon Prime

And the Gold goes to …

Winner: Chernobyl – Sky Atlantic

Whilst I’m very happy to see Netflix’s ‘Unbelievable’ and Amazon’s ‘Good Omens’ get some recognition, it was clear from very early in the voting that ‘Chernobyl’ was going to take some beating. The Sky Atlantic/HBO mini-series starred Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson and Jessie Buckley in the true story of the unprecedented man-made tragedy, and the brave men and women who made incredible sacrifices to save Europe from unimaginable disaster.

Along with taking nearly 50% of the votes in the GT Awards, the series has garnered universal acclaim for its gut-wrenching story of the Chernobyl disaster. Written and executive produced by Craig Mazin (‘The Identity Thief’, ‘The Huntsman: Winter’s War’), and directed by Johan Renck (‘Breaking Bad’, ‘Blackstar’), the drama received 19 Emmy nominations, winning a staggering 10, including Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing. It also picked up a Television Critics Association Award and is nominated for multiple Golden Globes, SAG awards and even a Grammy! It is a harrowing watch, but a truly stunning piece of television art.
