‘The Witcher: Blood Origin’: Michelle Yeoh & Sophia Brown Join Cast Of Netflix Prequel Series

Netflix’s limited prequel series The Witcher: Blood Originhas added two more people to the cast the streaming service has announced – ‘Star Trek: Discovery’s Michelle Yeoh, and Sophia Brown (‘Giri/Haji’, ‘The Capture,’ ‘Marcella’).

Set in an elven world 1200 years before the world of ‘The Witcher’‘Blood Origin’ will tell a story lost to time – the creation of the first prototype Witcher, and the events that lead to the pivotal “conjunction of the spheres,” when the worlds of monsters, men, and elves merged to become one.

Michelle Yeoh is set to play Scían, the very last of her nomadic tribe of sword-elves. No one can come close to her artistry with the blade, and no one carries as much loss within their heart. When a chance presents itself to retrieve a stolen sacred sword, taken from her fallen tribe by nefarious means, she launches herself into a deadly quest that will change the outcome of the Continent.

Yeoh has recently been starring in ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, originally as Captain Philippa Georgiou, then as the mirror universe version, Emperor Georgiou. She previously starred in John M. Chu’s acclaimed romantic comedy ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, and Ang Lee’s ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ movies. She can next be seen in James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ sequels and Marvel’s ‘Shang-Chi’.

Sophia Brown is set to play Éile, an elite warrior blessed with the voice of a goddess, who has left her clan and position as Queen’s guardian to follow her heart as a nomadic musician. A grand reckoning on the Continent forces her to return to the way of the blade in her quest for vengeance and redemption. Jodie Turner-Smith (‘Nightflyers’, ‘The Last Ship’) was originally cast in the role, but had to leave the part due to a scheduling conflict caused by the pandemic shifting the filming dates around.

Brown’s notable TV credits include: ‘Giri/Haji’ (BBC2/Netflix); ‘The Capture’ (BBC/Peacock); ‘Marcella’ (Netflix/ITV); ‘I AM’ (Channel 4); ‘Clique’ (BBC/POP); and ‘Guerrilla’ (Showtime/Sky Atlantic).

Yeoh and Brown join the previously announced cast of Laurence O’Fuarain (‘Vikings’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Into the Badlands’) who plays Fjall, who was born into a clan of warriors sworn to protect a King but carries a deep scar within – the death of a loved one who fell in battle trying to save him. A scar that won’t let him settle, or make peace with himself or the world around him. In his quest for redemption, Fjall will find himself fighting beside the most unlikely of allies as he carves a path of vengeance across a continent in turmoil.

Declan de Barra (‘The Originals, ‘The Witcher’) will act as Executive Producer and Showrunner and Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (‘The Witcher’ showrunner) will act as Executive Producer. Original author Andrzej Sapkowski will serve as creative consultant on the series. Jason Brown and Sean Daniel from Hivemind, and Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawko from Platige Films will all serve as executive producers.

No news yet on when The Witcher: Blood Origin will premiere, but it will be a six-part, live-action, limited series when it does land. If you want to keep track of this show you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
