The BBC has released a little teaser trailer for ‘Great Expectations‘, a new adaptation of the Dickens classic from ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight.
‘Great Expectations’ is the coming-of-age story of an orphan nicknamed Pip, who yearns for a greater lot in life. A twist of fate introduces him to the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) and Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin – ‘Roadkill’, ‘Line of Duty’), showing him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip must work out the cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be.
In the newly released clip, we see Colman as Miss Havisham meeting the young Pip (played by Tom Sweet) as he arrives at Satis House for the first time.
The series also stars Fionn Whitehead (‘Dunkirk’) as the older Pip, Ashley Thomas (‘Them’, ‘The Night Of’) as Jaggers, Johnny Harris (‘This Is England’, ‘A Christmas Carol’) as Magwitch, Hayley Squires (‘I, Daniel Blake’, ‘Adult Material’) as Sara, Owen McDonnell (‘Killing Eve’, ‘Silent Witness’) as Joe, Trystan Gravelle (‘A Discovery of Witches’, ‘Quiz’) as Compeyson and Matt Berry (‘What We Do In the Shadows’, ‘Toast of London’) as Mr. Pumblechuck.
Knight writes and executive produces the drama, alongside Tom Hardy, Ridley Scott, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker, Kate Crowe and Mona Qureshi for the BBC – the team behind Knight’s adaptation of ‘A Christmas Carol’. ‘Great Expectations’ is produced by FX Productions in association with the BBC, Scott Free and Hardy Son & Baker. Lucy Forbes (‘This Is Going To Hurt’, ‘The End of the F***ing World’, and the new Netflix series ‘Eric’) serves as lead director, with Mark Kinsella (‘White Lines’, ‘Anatomy of a Scandal’) as producer.
‘Great Expectations’ is the second Dickens adaptation penned by Knight, following the hit limited series ‘A Christmas Carol’. The writer/creator also recently had a massive hit for the BBC with his drama ‘SAS: Rogue Heroes’, which the BBC renewed for a second season, and is working on ‘This Town’, a Ska/Two Tone drama set in the Midlands, the long-awaited second season of ‘Taboo’, and the ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie.
The series was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Director of Drama and Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer at the BBC, and FX. The BBC and FX also produced the acclaimed drama series ‘Taboo’, starring Tom Hardy, written by Steven Knight and produced by Knight, Hardy, Chips Hardy, Ridley Scott, Dean Baker and Kate Crowe.
‘Great Expectations‘ does not yet have a premiere date, but will air on BBC One in the UK and on FX in the USA at some point in 2023. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
