Amazon Reportedly Putting MGM IP To Work, Developing Projects Based On ‘Stargate’, ‘Robocop’, ‘Legally Blond’ & More

According to reports today, Amazon has begun mining MGM’s IP for new tv and film projects, following their $8.45 Billion acquisition of the company back in 2021.

MGM has a vast catalogue with more than 4,000 films and over 17,000 TV shows, so there is a lot for Amazon to potentially work with, however, the initial targets for Amazon Studios seem to be ‘Stargate’, ‘Robocop’, ‘Legally Blonde’, ‘Fame’, ‘Barbershop’, ‘The Magnificent Seven’, ‘Pink Panther’ and ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’, according to Deadline, who broke the news.

Each potential project is being looked at individually, with some being looked at for film, others for TV, and some for both. ‘Stargate’ is one which has us particularly intrigued, which is being considered for both film and TV series, with a film coming first. However, Joseph Mallozzi, who was showrunner/writer/EP on ‘Stargate: SG1/Atlantis/Universe’, has previously confirmed that none of the original creative team are involved at the moment. So, whether that means they’d go down the route of a complete reboot, ignoring the beloved TV shows, or a continuation of some kind is unclear.

From the sci-fi side, the other big project is ‘Robocop’, which is being looked at from the other side, with a TV show first, and film later. This wouldn’t be the first reboot rodeo for Detroit’s metallic finest, as the original 1987 movie spawned two sequels and a reboot film, along with four separate TV shows over the years.

Outside of sci-fi, ‘Legally Blonde’ is another project which could head to TV and film. There have been multiple attempts to make a third movie in recent years, which haven’t gone anywhere, along with a couple of attempts at TV series. It did, however, spawn a massively successful stage show with ‘Legally Blonde the Musical’.

Whilst those three projects are more in the early stages of discussion, there are three TV series apparently in active development. ‘Fame’, based on the teen musical film and TV show; ‘Barbershop’, based on Tim Story’s movies starring Ice Cube; And ‘The Magnificent Seven’, based on the classic western.

Out of the other potential projects, ‘The Thomas Crown Affair’ is being eyed as a possible film, whilst ‘Pink Panther’ is being considered as an animated project. There are also plans to expand both the ‘Creed’ and ‘Rocky’ franchises across TV and film, along with a possible ‘Poltergeist’ project.

We should stress, none of the things mentioned here have been officially ordered yet by Amazon, so some may fall by the wayside, or be years off coming to a screen near you. We will let you know if and when we hear more.
