All Of ‘Red Dwarf’ Lands On iPlayer Together In The Same Place For The First Time

Some good news for smegheads everywhere! For the first time ever, all seasons of the beloved sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, along with the feature-length episode, ‘The Promised Land’, are available together in one place on BBC iPlayer from today.

For those of you who have somehow missed the show, the series is set on the mining ship Red Dwarf. The crew are dead, killed by a radiation leak. The only survivors are Dave Lister (Craig Charles), who was in suspended animation during the disaster, and his pregnant cat, who was safely sealed in the hold. Revived three million years later, Lister’s only companions are a life form who evolved from his cat (Danny John-Jules), and Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie), a hologram simulation of one of the dead crew. They are later joined by Kryton (Robert Llewellyn) a Series 4000 mechanoid which they rescued from a crashed ship. There is also Holly, the ship’s computer (played by Norman Lovett and Hattie Hayridge), and Kristine Kochanski (played by Clare Grogan and Chloë Annett), Lister’s ex-girlfriend/crush, who appear at various points across the run.

The series ran for eight seasons on the BBC from 1988 to 1997, before being revived on Dave in 2009 for the ‘Back To Earth’ season, followed by three full seasons and a feature-length special titled ‘The Promised Land’. It has not aired on the BBC since 2007. Edit: It does seem ‘Back To Earth’ is actually missing from iPlayer the lineup at the moment… Although, you’re not missing much as it is universally regarded as… not good…

‘Red Dwarf’ was last on our screens back in 2020, however, since then, things have been rather quiet for the crew of the rouge short one. That was due to a legal case launched in 2021 between co-creators Doug Naylor and the company he co-founded, Grant Naylor Productions over the rights to the series. Earlier this year, that dispute was resolved, with Naylor returning as a board member of Grant Naylor Productions, potentially paving the way for a new series, although nothing has yet been announced on that front.

One thing currently missing from this dump of ‘Red Dwarf’ content onto iPlayer is the Smeg Ups’ and ‘Smeg Outs’ outtakes, which were previously released on DVD/Videotape. However, Doug has mentioned on social media, he is working on getting those added as well!

Red Dwarf‘ Seasons 1-12 can be watched right now on BBC iPlayer. If you want to keep track of ‘Red Dwarf‘, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
