‘Ahsoka’ Gets Full Trailer Packed With Rebels & Lighsabers, Premiering August On Disney+

Ahsoka, Hera, Sabine, Ezra, Thrawn, and lots more!

by Dave Elliott

As we prepare to hurtle back to a galaxy far, far away, Disney+ has released the official trailer for Ahsoka, filled with characters from ‘Star Wars: Rebels’, along with lots of lightsaber battling and action!

Set after the fall of the Empire, ‘Ahsoka’ follows the former Jedi knight Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, as she investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.

In addition to Rosario Dawson in the title role, ‘Ahsoka’ stars Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, Ivanna Sakhno as Shin Hati, Diana Lee Inosanto as Morgan Elsbeth, David Tennant as Huyang, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, and the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll.

For those of you who don’t remember (*spoilers* for the end of ‘Rebels’ obviously!), when we last saw Ezra, the Rebels were in a confrontation with Admiral Thrawn. Ezra stayed onboard Thrawn’s flagship to make sure he was defeated as it was pulled away into hyperspace to parts unknown by a pod of Purrgils (aka space whales.) Skip forward five years, and Ahsoka teams up with Sabine with a vow to search for the missing Ezra.

Looking at the new trailer, it seems something has happened between Ahsoka and Sabine, which led to the former Jedi apprentice “abandoning” her friend. But with the return of Thrawn as “heir to the Empire” (a direct nod to Timothy Zahn’s Legends novels), Ahsoka needs to seek out Sabine for help. They appear to be back together later in the trailer, alongside Hera, after a somewhat frosty reunion. The trailer also shows Ezra talking for the first time, although still only in hologram form, and shows a lot more of the sadly departed Ray Stevenson as the menacing Baylan Skoll.

We have seen Ahsoka since the end of the ‘Rebels’ animated series, as she made her live-action debut in ‘The Mandalorian’ season 2. Meeting up with the titular hero of the series, she informs Mando that his little green ward, informally referred to as “baby Yoda”, was actually called “Grogu”, and was a former Youngling from the Jedi temple. From there, Mando takes Grogu for training with Luke Skywalker, but following the events of ‘The Book Of Boba Fett’, the duo end up back together again.

The series is written by Dave Filoni, who executive produces alongside Jon Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, and Carrie Beck. Karen Gilchrist is the co-executive producer. Filoni (Rebels) also directs, alongside Peter Ramsey (The Mandalorian), Steph Green (Watchmen), Geeta Patel (House of the Dragon), Jennifer Getzinger (Jessica Jones) and Rick Famuyiwa (The Mandalorian).

Star Wars: Ahsoka‘ will premiere exclusively on Disney+ Wednesday, 23rd August 2023 in the UK and worldwide.
