‘Superman: Legacy’: Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced & Edi Gathegi Join Cast As DC Heroes

Three more cast have been announced for James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy’, including his “muse” Nathan Fillion as (a) Green Lantern (although possibly not the one you were expecting), Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific.

DC Studios co-boss Peter Safran made the announcement during an interview with Vanity Fair yesterday, saying the trio of actors will join the recently announced David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Nathan Fillion has appeared in all of Gunn’s directed projects from his directorial debut ‘Slither’ in 2006 up to ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ this year. Fillion is also no stranger to DC, having appeared in Gunn’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ as T.D.K. (The Detachable Kid), along with voicing Green Lantern Hal Jordan in multiple DC animated movies. However, for live-action, ‘The Rookie’ actor will take on another Green Lantern role – Guy Gardner – the second Lantern to be chosen from Earth after Jordan.

Isabela Merced has appeared in multiple tv and film roles including the lead role in Nickelodeon’s ‘100 Things to Do Before High School‘, the movie ‘Transformers: The Last Knight’, and most recently, the Hulu film ‘Rosaline’. the 22yr old actress will take on the part of Hawkgirl in ‘Superman: Legacy’.

Edi Gathegi has a huge array of acting credits under his belt, from the ‘Twilight’ movies and ‘X-Men: First Class’, to tv shows such as ‘House’, ‘The Blacklist’ and Apple’s ‘For All Mankind’. He is set to play Mister Terrific in Gunn’s film.

What is interesting about this casting is that it does confirm that the Gunn/Safran DCU is an established world, with multiple superheroes already in play. Using Fillion as Gardner, and as the first Lantern we see on the big screen is also an interesting choice. There is a live-action ‘Lanterns’ tv series in development for MAX featuring Hal Jordan and John Stewart, but rather than introduce them here, Gunn has gone with Gardner instead. Gunn has confirmed, as will all of the new DCU casting Fillion will play Gardner across all new projects.

‘Superman: Legacy’ is currently scheduled to fly into cinemas in July 2025.
